basement mold

This is what actually brought to this forum in the first place, and NJWashingGuy mentioned it in another thread so I'm just going to go ahead and through this out there. I searched and didn't really find my answer yet so here goes.

Is powerwashing or steam cleaning basement mold an insane idea? I know the typical way of handling it is just apply a 10% bleach solution and scrub it/rinse it after it sets, wear a respirator try to ventilate the basement, and vac it up.

I was looking at a house that had a really bad mold problem, every surface in it was moldy even the floor joists over head. I felt that if I were do it "the old fasioned way" that I'd either die or come out looking and probably feeling like Johnny Winter. I've been told to "just send day laborers in to do it while you do something else"-- besides the political implications, maaaaaannnnn I am not going to be the one to explain to the police what happened to those guys down in that basement when the fumes overcome them. I've been thinking about power washing it or steaming it. I was also thinking about vacuming up if I power washed because I didn't like the idea of squeegeing the bleach over the the sump pump.

Steaming it is starting to look like a real reasonable option, especially since it would also be applicable to mold and other problems in the rest of the house.

So has anyone done moldy basements with a pressure washer or steam cleaner? I'm not talking about a patch of mold, but these walls look almost upholstered.

Its not an insane idea, actually if you are buying the house, use the fact that it is there as leverage to lower the price. Wear a mask, cover the walls & mold with the bleach and soap, powerwash it off and then wet vac the majority of the waste water. Fans and vent. You will need a squeege however, to move the water around because the floor is not going to be perfect, will make the clean up easier. Use the day laborer to carry out the waste water and dump it. I'm in northern NJ if you really need help. If you have any other questions, give me a way to contact you and I'll see if I can't help you out.
