Burner ?

Hey Wiz,

I was washing tonight and went to turn on the heat and nothing. I mean the motor didn't come on. I had the transformer go once, but I could still hear the motor on the burner. I thought it might be the switch so I took it off and touched the two wires and got nothing.

I have an elite machine with a Beckett Burner. What do you think?

Thanks

On the burner motor you will find a little red reset button. Push it in and see if the burner kicks on.

If it is a 12v burner it does not have one. If it is 120v it does and it is on the burner motor it's self. If it is 12v the switch or the relay usually goes bad. Sometimes the relay is inside of the burner just below the transformer. Their is a circuit board with a flame sensor that goes bad. Sometimes the voltage regulator on the motor is the cause on 12v burners. On 120v the generator has a circuit breaker on it that you have to push in.

What will that cost to fix ? Do you think a local dealer should have the parts in stock to fix the problem.

Just whip it over here and I'll fix it for you. lol Yea any service center should be able to fix the problem in about an hour or less. Lets see, Shop rate $50, motor $75, Transformer $99, Switch $20, Relay $10 I doubt all of those things are bad. Less than $300 to get it fixed.

The Problem is probobly simple.I would fix it in no time. A good honest repair shop should be able to fix it while you wait. You could track down the problem with a meter. See if you have a wire off of the safty high limit switch or your thermostat.

Here is the low down. I took it in and the guy tested the wires with a meter. He found that the the transformer was pulling to much amp. He changed the (20)fuse and it would blow with in 5 seconds or so. He put a (30)fuse in, and it ran for a while then the Transformer former popped and started to smoke.

He changed the transformer and it works fine. How ever the (30) is still in. They ran out of (20). I have to pick up a few and try the (20). I hope all will be ok. He seems to think that the transformer was on the way out and because of that, it was pulling to much amp and popped the fuse. That is why the motor was not running at all. He billed me for the transformer and a half hour labor.

What do you think ?

Good deal. Looks like the fuse did it's job. I tried to help you with it. Too bad I can't use my meter online to find problems.

Instead of a fuse, go to the parts house and get a circuit breaker, the breaker will blow, and reset. That way, you can probably finish the job and do repairs later.

Hey Dan,

I just bought a used elite unit along with several other peices of equipment off a guy up in North Brook (going out of business). Question??? Is there supposed to be a inline fuse going to the transformer itself or just off of the starter solenoid? This unit is a couple years old but it is similar to our Tuff Skid.

Thanks... Greg

P.S. I wonder why the Elites go through transformers so often?? This guy told me he had to replace the one on this unit as well whereas (knock on wood) I have never replaced more than the starter solenoid on our Tuff.(same burner assy).

Just my opinion you should install a 15amp circuit breaker on the generator if it has one. If not install a 15amp breaker between the power supply and the 12v burner. Who wants to fumble around with fuses in the dark?

Thanks for the suggestion.... actually I was surprised to find a fuse inline with the igniter at all. We have a Tuff unit with the same burner setup and it does not have one. Good idea though.... beats burning out a $60 igniter.
