Looking for a deterent to keep carpenter bees away from a deck Deck was p/w and sealed with Wolman's F&P 2 years ago. Will be rewashing and resealing this spring but want to address the bee problem before I do the cleaning. Anyone have an idea of a product to
keep the bees from attacking the wood and should it be applied before or after the deck is sealed?

As a pest control pest control operator for 15 years. I don't kno of anything a non professional pest control operator can use. Call a pest control company maybe they can help you.

I believe there is a substance called "Boron". Not sure how you would use it or if you can get it.

A borate treatment can be applied to the wood which will attack and prevent any wood boring insect infiltrations, however a borate treatment needs to be applied to bare wood. You would have to remove the finish completely from the deck and then spray on the borate treatment preferably when the wood has a moisture content of about 30%. Not only will borates combat insects, but they will prevent rot caused by moisture. Any log home supply company will have them. We use one called "Tim-Bor" all the time. It comes in a powder that you mix with water. This is the only treatment that will prevent insect damage on exterior wood. Hope this helps.

Hi Again

I really suggest that you contact a local pest control company in your area and talk to them about this problem. I kno that you can spray the ground with a restricted use pesticide and it will help. Also check with the state to make sure you don't need a special licence to apply any type of wood insecticide like tim-bor in your area. Any questions e-mail me ed95@wi.net
