How much do you charge for stripping and nuetralizing. The fence has 7 year old solid stain. I am only cleaning, not restaining, the owner said he would restain but wants to use a transparent stain instead of a solid as before, is this possible?

The way I read your question, you want to strip a solid stain and the homeonwer is going to put on a clear.

Some things to think about:
• Clear sealing means wood has to be almost perfectly stripped. VERY difficult when removing a solid from vertical surfaces
• Stripping a solid from a soft wood like cedar is going to leave it very furred and fuzzy looking.
• You are going to have a mess of acrylic "shavings" that are difficult to remove from grass (unless the solid is oil/alkyd based which is rare)
• The stripper is going to be either extremely hot and kill everything underneath it or you have to purchase a low caustic stripper made for stripping paint and acrylics. These are extremely expensive at $50 per gallon. One gallon strips 75 square feet. AND it has to be applied via industrial airless or hand painted on.
• When you are done stripping and pH Balancing the wood, you are going to have to sand (probably a good portion of it)

The homeowner is going to expect perfection because you are the professional. He is giving you the crap work and not even allowing you to make up any profit on the sealer application. Honestly? Consider walking away. We all have jobs like this under our belts where we lost our shirts, spent an incredible amount of time and got mediocre results. Its not worth it. I'd rather donate my time to a charity job like a school or church.

But, since you asked, to do this job properly I would probably charge almost as much as it would cost the H.O to replace the fence.

Cedar Fence

Thanks, realy great info. I'll inform the owner that all I can do is a regular wash and let him know that he should restain with a solid stain. Thanks
