Does anyone here clean vinyl awnings? I just got a bid to clean a 2 vinyl awnings and just ordered some chemicals to clean them with. Could someone tell me the best way to clean these.

What am I missing?

If you already ordered chems to do the job, you must have an idea what you're going to do. Apply chems, brush, let dwell, rinse, viola'!

What SPECIFIC information are you looking for?

You can easily search the net for companies that sell awning cleaning chemicals. Phone them and inquire about proper usage of their chems. They can tell you exactly how to use their products. A good brush with an extension handle will be required.

I would think that you could use a mild degreaser to break up the black stuff then brush and rinse. You definately can not get anything sharp near it, hit it with high pressure, or hit it with anything that will fade the colors like TSP.

Better make sure the chems are compatible with the threads used to sew the awnings. We've had a couple guys in our area use products that broke down the threads and caused the awnings to fall apart at the seams.

shiny awnings

Curious to see if you washed the vinyl awnings, we're putting a bid in this week for a restaurant.

The owner stated that the awning had a "Shine" to it. Have any idea what to apply on it to make it 'shine'? Is it like Armor all (which won't last long) or a wax???

Deckrock,

Here's the bottom line......you shouldn't be bidding on a job that you don't know how to do. You can get yourself into a lot of trouble.

Call some awning cleaning chemical suppliers and ask them the questions. They can be your best source of information. They are the pros who deal with those questions every single day.

Myself, I've washed lots of awnings and obtained all kinds of results. It would be reckless of me to recommend an approach for you to take when I haven't even seen a picture of what you're talking about. In fact, all I know is they are vinyl, nothing else.

We've cleaned awnings before, never been approached about having a 'shine' to them.... that's what I'm inquiring about. A product that is applied after it is cleaned, to add a shine.

We used a product called Glory on vinyl (plastic) awnings - they did actually have a nice reflecting shine to them - it was the cleaner.

Just from a logical standpoint - vinyl awning - vinyl siding....why wouldn't a housewash mix (including wax) do, possibly without the bleach/as much bleach to insure the integrity of the stitching? I'm not suggesting - this is a question to those with previous vinyl awning experience who may have discovered that not all awnings require "special" treatment.
