Well Dom, if you want other opinions , other than Richards, you shouldnt insult anyone. Richard is experienced and he feels his is the only way to do things and if that is what you want that is what you get. You have been in the business for one year and are tired of hearing me, ok. Richard and I are on opposite sides when it comes to doing things, but if you were smart you would listen to all and take what you need from each. Richard speaks from his business now, which apparently is succefful. I try to remember what is was like starting out and everyone was trying to sell me everthing they could. When someone like you asks questions I am assuming you dont have a lot of cash to throw away. So I keep it simple and as inexpensive as I can. If you like whats it happening you can invest more, later. My business was built on and by the market in this area MA, and my techniques may not apply in California, but they work here. So what we all have to say , combined, may be just what you need.

Ed,
Well I do believe you do have aot to bring to the table, but hey when you see some one complaining over little things then I would rather not be apart of that. I am sure you have a wealth of knowledge for the biz. But hey if you don't want to help because I offened you well I am sorry for that. Well let hear what you have to offer. So far Richard has not given me an advice that would cause me to throw out cash. But you are right I am willing to hear from everyone. And that is what I am hoping from this note. I want to see if everyone for this field can pitch in. And share knowledge with each other. And write real questions not ones that are complaining about a $50 donation. So Ed I willl stop making childish insuts about you if you can stop asking childish questions. SO what do you say can we get to the nuts and bolts about stuff here or what?

P.S.

Ed I owe you this one. [bm]

I had to double check, the topic seems to have moved from the original topic, which was cold weather work. The coldest I've done was 4 above zero, and a metal roof. You may want to make sure you have hot water out the end of the nozzle before going on the roof. Squirt hot water on the roof to melt the snow and ice. Wait for the water to dry, go to work. Keep an eye on the roof, use hot water to keep the roof safe to work on. Stay on the uphill side of the fan, use fall restraints if you have them. Use the screws that hold the sheet metal to the roof to increase tractions.
Don't be afraid to reschedule the job. I don't know about you, but I don't make enough to get hurt. Think about tieing off the ladder before climbing.

David, no response - still wondering - per previous question - do you tip improperly wired upblast fans? Richard

winter work

I have had squirel cage fans freeze up. My solution is to drill a hole in the botton of fan houseing and let the water out. You may still need to turn on the fan to blow the water out.

OH thanks I totally forgot about squirel cage fans. Oh man I don't like those I don't know why but everytime I have to clean one its a pain in the butt. Those fans are such a pain. I run into quite a few of them but still have a hell of a time with them. Thats right there is a lot of water that stays in there. Thanks for the input. I have been haveing good luck lately it has warmed up a bit here, but I know the worst is yet to come. How about the chemical does it freeze up on you? I have heard about hitting the fan with hot water first. Do you do that? Have you ever heard of water freezeing up in the vent and when the restuarants and starts there grills that a bit of water drops down? I had this one guy tell me about that don't know if I can believe him.

I've not had my chemical freeze on the fan too much, never tried to heat the blades w/hot water first. When it is that cold out, I just apply more chemical. sometimes I use hot water when mixxing my chemical. When done cleaning I always run the fan. This does 2 things for me. I know the fan works, and it drys the hood, filters, plenum and duct. If you run the fan untill you are ready to walk out the back door, the cchances jof drips are reduced. Sometimes squirrell fan housings will collect a lot of water, so it may be needed to turn the fan on and off and on serveral times to get rid of trapped watre, even if you drill a hold in the housing. Hop this helps, now it is off to work, I have to do an estimate to upgrade a chinese fire system and a Burger King to finish the fire system upgrade.

JUST TO JUMP IN HERE WITH A COMMENT ABOUT TIPPING FANS WITH IMPROPER WIRING..........NO WE WONT BECAUSE IF THE WIRE PULLS AWAY FROM THE MOTOR OR SHORTS OUT WE'D END UP HAVING TO PAY FOR IT IF IT DONT MEET CODE WE TELL THE MANAGER/OWNER WE THEN SHOW HIM/HER THE CODE (I'VE MADE COPIES OF CERTAIN PAGES OF THE NFPA CODE AND CARRY IT WITH US IN THE VANS) WRITE IT UP ON REPORT TELL THEM TO GET IT FIXED IF THE FAN HAS NO HINGE ON IT WE WONT TIP IT EITHER WE SHOW THEM THE CODE AND THAT IT IN OUR PROFESSIONAL OPINION IT DONT MEET CODE AND THAT FOR A NOMINAL FEE WE CAN INSTALL A HINGE KIT
