Curious spots on driveway

I have twice seen spots that are not visible until wet. Once wet white spots appear. Would like to know what may have caused them, and if asked, how (if can) get rid of them? So far, they are just a curiousity to me. Never had a conversation about them, I am not going to introduce what I am clueless about.

spots

the spots your talking about can be caused by dot 3 break fluid.
It is a synthetic brake fluid that contains silicon.
Silicon is used in some types of cement sealers. Once you apply a silicon based sealer or any silicon to cement it can never be covered with any other type of sealer because it just wont penetrate.
One place this happens is at tire stores where they wash the blue off new whitewall tires. It is a silicon and once it get's on the cement it's there to stay.

In most cases I have seen this due to tire (whitewall) cleaner. If you examine the spots they are usally spaced out as the four tires on a car would be.

I have a spot like that in my driveway from Armor All when my
son did his tires.

I have not tried any chemicals on it yet, however I plan to clean and seal our exposed aggregate driveway.

all the

things being described here are either silcon based or cleaning off silicon.

Your driveway must be clean! As it gets dirty, those spots become more and more noticable. The silicon in the tire shine has penetrated and sealed the concrete. I have spots from 10 yrs ago in my driveway!

I have been toying with the idea of Armour-All'ing my driveway. But seriously...it seems that a silicon-based sealer would work well. Anyone care to suggest one?

I've come across the marks from the silicone tire sprays. I tried a sodium metisilicate based concrete cleaner, and oxalic acid, and the stains were still there. I'm sure there has to be something that will remove them, but I haven't had the time to experiment yet.

Luckily, my neighbor has the stains on his driveway, and gave me the go-ahead to try what I want on them. Sure, he'll get a clean driveway for free, but I'll get the knowledge.

I've seen both from the tires and from Amoral. I have the shape of a car mat on my drive when it rains. Never messed with them.

I guess we all have some home work!

after

silicon has got on or should i say IN your cement It's there to stay.
Ask JAY from v-seal. If cement has had any type of silicon sealer applied to it you cant use any other sealer ever again.
just wont penatrate. Not even acid etching will help.

Ron,

Tell Jay I said hi! Unless you told him yesterday. Anyway what does V- Seal have to do with the subject of getting something off the concrete.

Sounds like silcon based sealers are the best if nothing will ever penatrate it?

MY POINT WAS YOU CANT GET THE SILICON SEALER OFF.
GOOD OR BAD. JAY WAS USED JUST AS A REFFRENCE IN CASE SOMEONE DID'NT BELIEVE ME.
DONT KNOW ENUFF ABOUT THE DIFFRENT TYPES OF SEALERS TO GIVE A GOOD ANS.

Dan, NaOH won't take off silicone. Doubt anything will. Silicone is sometimes used to seal brick. Not sure that silicone would allow sufficient vapor penetration to be used as a concrete sealer. Interesting question.

Have some of those annoying white stains on my driveway, they came from the a guy that used to rent the place. He was a pool man and he often spilled Muriatic acid while unloading his truck.
