Before I help. Are these docks over the water, and do you plan on recovering since I notice you are from Michigan. I don't want to see you get yourself in a heap of fines and trouble.

Hi Dave Ott,

I contacted the natl EPA, and the local Michigan Dept. of Environmental Quality. He said that, "its a gray area in the regulations." Using chems to clean a dock over water w/ chems would not be recommend. Cleaning the dock with high water pressure would be recommend he said. And also, using a brush/roller to paint instead of spraying would be better on the dock so as to minimize the paint discharge to water.

thanks for you response,
Ramie

Not trying to discourage you at all. Just had a fellow powerwasher at a marina who was just about to wash off the docks and wood around seawalls, and almost got in a mess due to the fact the DNR happened to be patrolling by in a boat looking for fishing licenses of the fisherman, and noticed what he was about to wash. He wasn't going to use chemicals but was told even the water from washing the docks is now waste water due to the fact of the dirt and algae/moss. Also that treated lumber is used for most docks and contains arsenic and when wet, arsenic will come to the surface again. Even low or high rinse will wash it into the lake. Kind of like how when washing even algae /moss from ground surfaces it can not enter the storm drains. The only thing that can wash this stuff away is rain water and that went for the docks. He was told he had to recover the water if he was going to proceed. So just trying to keep you safe.

Hi Dave Ott,

Thanks for your extra info on this matter. I'll plan to follow the local EPA's guidlines and proceed with dock job's carefully. I guess some rules are different in other counties. I'm from the SW MI area, and the officer said that he would not stop us from cleaning/sealing docks. He didn't want any discharge of chems..but cleaning with water was fine.

I have one more question...what would you charge for a usual clean or strip/seal dock job?

thanks for your response,
Ramie

...I was wondering if I could sue the DNR if my granny from Mi. slips on the built up slimy algae on her dock and breaks her hip?
