dog odors

i've been asked to get the smell out of a garage in which three large dogs were kept for many years. my inclination is to use something like pine sol followed perhaps by an odor eliminator like odo-ban. my search of the board didn't turn up any past threads on the subject. i've not seen the garage, so i don't know just how bad it is. any advice?

thanks

odor

Try chlorine pure and watch the chemical reaction on the urine .
when you are done rinse down the deck and ventilate area. This will neutralize the smell.

Richard,

I was in Home Depot a few weeks ago around the cleaning chemicals and I seen a hanging bag of Rocks. It was, believe it or not, suppose to eliminate oders.
I've never seen anything like it, but maybe it's worth looking into.
I can't remember the name of the product, but it appeared to be some type of Lava rocks inside a small tight net onion style bag. Maybe once you clean the area, you could hang one of these things in an out of the way place. I think it's an air order absorber. Anyway, it was weird looking.
If nothing else, you could hang it from the ceiling as a conversation piece. :)

Good Luck

Be sure to wear a respirator, as animal urine has a high ammonia content and mixed with the chlorine, will make some lethal gas.
There are a lot of products that will take care of this, that were made for this application. A live bacteria enzyme solution is the best approach. "Natures Miracle" is the one that I have used
many times with great results, but their are many out there.
After you get a look at the job, then go to a pet store or Janitorial store, as they know much more about their products.

thanks folks. you've given me some ideas to play around with.

on a related note, the owner has asked for suggestions about how to get rid of the dog smell that she says permiates the house (i can't smell it, but women seem to have a keener sense of smell). so far, air fresheners have served only to mask the odor temporarily. i've got one of those ionizer air cleaners that never seemed to do much for my cigarette smoke--think that might help, one room at a time?

thanks again.

The first question is why is the smell in the house? Did the dogs urinate in there, or is the smell wafting in from the garage?
If it is wafting in, then taking care of the garage will treat most of it, but if the dogs used the house for a toilet, then the problems are big. Carpet cleaning of pet urine is only somewhat effective, as it also goes to the pad and then the foundation.
Is this a new owner or tenant and are the dogs gone for good? This is probably going to fall into the class of restorative
maintenance.

i think the smell in the house is dog needed a bath rather than dog peed kind of smell. like i said, i couldn't smell anything in the house, but the new owner acted like she was living down wind from a zoo. it's the type thing a good attic fan would take care off in a couple of days, but she's got no attic fan.

thanks for your interest.

A friend of mine rented her house to people who had kids and a dog, none of which were house broke. I got some odor eater stuff from the local laundery/carpet cleaner. It was a liqued that we sprinkled on the carpet, followed by a powder that we sprinkled on the carpet and then vacuumed up. I have no idea what the brand name was, but it did work.
