Driveway Sealing- A little long

While visiting my brother yesterday, I noticed a pressure cleaning company washing and sealing a few brick paver driveways on his street. Since I am new, I have been applying a good quailty paver sealer from a large local dealer with a roller. I am considering purchasing an airless sprayer to help me with the sealing time. What I saw yesterday, made me want to run home and post this message. The person appling the sealer was using an airless paint sprayer and a HUGE cloud of overspray was coming out of the nozzle. I could see a fine misted cloud go as high as the second story of the house and drift across the street to settle on some nice new cars! ( It was a little breezy) The sprayer seemed oblivious to this cloud. When I finally drove by, I noticed that they were using a 5-gal can of Thompson's driveway sealer and not the normal higher viscosity paver sealer that I am used to seeing from my supplier.

My questions are: Did he have the paint sprayers pressure set too high and how much pressure should be used for this type of application? Is there a special tip that will prevent this type of cloud ? What was he doing wrong? All I could picture was a liability suit for sealer all over peoples cars! I thought I needed to check with the board before I spend $800 on an airless paint sprayer that may cause me some real headaches. Since I hope to be doing a lot of pavers myself,I do need to be able to apply the sealer faster than a hand roller. What are your thoughts??

Spend $60-$90 on a back pack sprayer.I apply concrete sealer with a pump up,it is too thin for an airless.

Hey Ken,

I have applied with a pump sprayer also, but my airless is alot faster.

I use a bigger tip and less pressure, it keeps the sealer from atomizing. Those guys are obviously morons with using Thompson's. Bottom line is being careful and making good judgement calls when it comes to spraying. It is very hard to get a roller or brush in my hand anymore. I believe it is worth $800 for an airless, you will make up that money in spending less time at a job. My opinion.
