I realize this is last moment, but still thought it was worth letting people know about.

In January, President Obama passed an executive order requiring that the EPA reevaluate certain environmental regulations to determine which ones need to be adjusted, clarified or even repealed.

As a member of the pressure washing industry, this is an opportunity for you to let the EPA know how Clean Water Act (CWA) directly impacts your business.

Because there is power in numbers, we at Pressure Cleaning Contractor Magazine, along with the Power Washers Network of the Carolinas (PWNC), will also compile ALL comments submitted to us by 3/18/11 into a report to submit to the EPA on this topic. (The EPA deadline is 3/20/11).

To learn more, visit our website at A Magazine for Contractors, BY Contractors |  Pressure Cleaning Contractor Magazine and click on EPA at the top of the page.

Allison,

Is the intent to present the reasons why the enforcement of the Clean Water Act is harming the PW industry, or is the intent to promote the Clean Water Act enforcement ?

The intent is simply to identify the ways the the enforcement of the Clean Water Act may negatively impact our industry. I think the biggest problem seems to not be the CWA itself, but the discrepencies that various agencies have across the states in the way that apply the rules.

HOWEVER, that said, it has been pointed out that this may not be in the industry's best interest. To me, it seemed like a good opportunity to be heard. Others are seeing it as waving a red flag in front of a bull. Drawing attention where it may not already be.

So, that said, I won't be compiling any form of report and I simply encourage people to use their own discretion on whether or not they want to do anything with this "opportunity."

Suggestion has been given to me that I compile the report as originally planned, but don't submit it to the EPA after all. Then we can collectively look to see where the issues/problems/opinions lie.

I am not for repealing the CWA as it applies to our industry. But there are issues with the left hand often not knowing what the right is doing, so to speak.

CWA enforcement is inevitable Allison. Eventually it will be funded and enforced coast to coast. Being compliant and "ahead of the curve" places my company and the partnership(s) we have developed in a completely different league as 99% of PW contractors.

We can all punch holes and point out the hypocritical issues, but it's all about $$$, on both ends. The majority of PW contractors can not fund the $100,000 + capital investment to be compliant and competitive. The Feds and local authorities have already realized the potential revenue loss by not enforcing the CWA.

I also agree it would not be in the best interest of the industry, in general, to provide the EPA any feedback or arguments against the CWA. It would only be beneficial to the CWA fully compliant contractors (ie. just owning a vacuum and an off the shelf reclaim unit does not necessarily allow one to discharge legally and in compliance).

This is an episode where the good intention fairy got her rear end handed to her by the reality fairy. I would pull the whole thread if possible. I am not going to do anything on this. The information (EPA request) is public knowledge if anyone wants to act on it. However, it doesn't sound like the smartest option and I apologize.

No need to apologize Allison. This is a great discussion. The direction my business and the industry leaders are heading are directly related to this subject.
