Ever use Bleach White on concrete?

I had a customer tell me that he used to use "Bleach White", a jelled bleach product to whiten the sidewalks that he power washed.

Has anyone had any luck with this or heard any horror stories about using bleach while power washing?

Thanks for any input, as we are still learning the business.

Bleach really won't whiten concrete, but it is very useful for helping to remove stubborn mold/mildew. Some apply prior to washing, others after. Personally, I wash first, then downstream 12.5% over the entire area, spot treating with 6% as needed.

To whiten concrete, the best chem to use is oxalic acid (though some may say citralic acid). Applied evenly through a pump-up sprayer, oxalic does a great job of brightening concrete. If rust stains are an issue, oxalic will remove them, though you may need to spray the entire area in order to blend and not leave bright spots.

Thank you

Celeste and John,

Thank you for the advice. I will steer away from any bleach product and try Oxalic Acid.

Celeste: Went to your homepage (nice) and looked at your driveway, before and after photos - impressive.

Celeste,

The dirty driveway, then the clean driveway photo was impressive. We tried "Citra Clean" powder, but were not happy with the results. Our clean concrete NEVER looks as clean as your "after" picture. We use 300 degree steam and 3500 psi power washing and I thought we were getting the concrete clean... until I looked at yours. I will try the Oxalic Acid and see if that helps.

(I'm glad we are not in your city, as we might be eating a lot more Mac & Cheese with water to drink, while we considered moving away from you... LOL)
