excessive smoke coming out of pressure washer

I bought a used hot water skid unit and finally used the hot water function. It was blowing alot of smoke out of the stack to where I had to turn off the switch to stop the hot water. Do I need to clean out the coils or drain the deisal fuel considering it has been in there for over a year and a half?

Adjust air fuel mixture, use fuel pressure gauge.

Only thing I can think of that would cause to much air is if the air bands are opened to far. I would work the "not enough fuel". As Mark said check your fuel pressure first. If the burner has not been used in a while, I would then change the burner fuel filter. If it clears the problem for a short while, then I would drain and refill the diesel, along with another filter.
