Fire Hydrant Permits

Did anybody here ever use a Fire hydrant to fill up there water tank? And if so did you need a permit from the Water Authority to do so?
Last year I bought a fire hydrant hose and tool so I could use there water to fill up my tank. Why because for one a fire hydrant shoots out water so much faster than a regular house water spicket and also there is a hydrant right next to my driveway which made doing this ideal. Somebody told me you can fill a 500 gal tank in 5 minutes with a fire hydrant where as water from a house would take over an hour to do the same. Also hoping to crack the commercial cleaning industry filling up with a fire hydrant would be a necessity no doubt. Now of course after buying the hose and tool I call up the water authority and they tell me a permit to use there fire hydrants is $350/year and NO they don't give out permits to powerwashers. And to make matters worse if you are caught using the hydrants with no permit you will be fine $2000 for the first offense and can be charged criminally.(Does any one remember the moderator aran telling someone a while back to go ahead and steal water?) Any way landscapers are aloud to get hydrant permits but powerwashers are not. Boy was I pissed. Has anybody ever ran into this problem and do you need a permit to use a fire hydrant for powerwashing where you work? -John-

<FONT COLOR="e87400">Hey John,, sounds like it's differnet in your neck of the woods, in may area you jsut to the the local Water department (Local to where you're working & wanting to jack into the hydrant) & you give them I chunky "deposit" for a Hydrant meter and away you go. You use it then pay the tap when you return it (It comes out of the deposit) And here the water is pretty cheap ,, like alittle under $2bucks per 1000g

Try going to the water Dept's and tell em you need a hydrant h2o, if the say no go to another close they may say yes, grantit this may be the wrong area but it may work anyhow..

Keep in mind ALL areas are different

Dear me, John is gaining on me, butt pity him crashing into that ladies parking lot, now all those femmist are going to tear him apart, one part at a time.

OUCH

Now what I cannot figure out is why do so many businesses that deal with pressure washers sell those meters if no local water department will trust them? All they need do is record the gallon meter when we show up and record the difference when we return and we owe for what we use.

Must be a $$$$$ thing for the cities, then again if it is illegal why can we buy this stuff legally?

You can also be a reducer and the tool to open those hydrants up too so do tell us dummies again why we can buy this stuff legally if it is illegal to use it?

Something is screwy here.

John,
Here in N.C. I've purchased one of the hydrant hoses too and when the need arises,I go to the city office and just ask permission tell them what I'm needing the water for and have yet had to pay for it but on one ocassion! You guys must have some pretty stiff laws out there? Yes it is a fast way of getting water!!!!!!!!!Sorry to here you are having a problem.....

Here we have to rent a meter from our local Light gas and water division. It cost us a deposit of $175.00 you can use it and then go down to the local office whenever you like (every month or every 6 months) they will read the meter and let you know how much you owe.
Any balances you owe can be deducted from the deposit if you want to turn in the meter but we just keep ours.

We have tanks that will hold a total of 750 gals.and that only cost us about 90 cents each time we fill them up. We estimate the water usage and tack that onto any accounts that do not have a water supply. Usually the hydrant is right there so we really dont have to charge for hauling the water but if we have to travel very far we will charge an extra $75.00 for hauling water.

Our local LG& W division doesn't seem to have a problem with giving the meters to pressure washers. All they want is the money.

Here you buy the meter they lock it on the hydrate you want and charge you. So you can't take it with you. So I don't use it.

As for all the other posts about meters, Hummm sounds like we could use a voice in the city, state levels to me...

PWNA maybe ?
