I used to fly fish alot, even for trout,I no longer fly fish other than saying I'm going to again.I have gone to useing ultra lite tackle when going for a days of fun, like fly fishing it cann't be beat.

Altho I lose alot of monster bass on 2 lb test line with the thought in the back of my mind the fly rod could have gotten him.

Fly fishing

Barry, I lived in the mountains of Colorado for many years. Used to flyfish on a regular basis. Now Im in TX and only flyfish when the white bass make their yearly spawning run. Mostly use wet flys and Maribou jigs. Thought I would try some Saltwater flyfishing one of these days. Mostly sight casting for Redfish. Have some friends who flyfish alot in saltwater and maybe Ill hook up with them.

Michael,
I bet the fishing was great in Colorado. Fly fishing for trout here in the mts. of N.C. is a fairly new passion I have developed. I 've fished for just about everything, but this is a new venture for me that I am really excited about. Looking forward to the spring to head to the mountains ! They're about a 2 hour drive from here. My adventureous soul seeks quite solitude on a stream somewhere.

I was a flyfishing addict back in the mid 80's to mid 90's.I would fish three or four days a week, mainly in the catskills in ny state.I did alot of surf fishing on the jersey shore also.I actually went from racing motocross (about 10 years) to flyfishing.I got hurt alot less flyfishing, lol!but the cost can be about the same if your like me and love to spend money on equipment!I still have all my flyfishing equipment (could fill 2 rooms!) and plan on resuming my passion for it,but with family and business responsibilities it's kind of hard to find the time, but I definately will this year! You will start a lifelong passion that will bring you countless hours of enjoyment ,appreciation for the outdoors and solitude ,do a little research and you will find many great people in history were flyfisherman, must be something to it!
HAVE FUN!

What type flyrod do you guys use,I have a old wooden bamboo, think over 35 years old. Some of the threads are hanging from the eye's,cork handle has a few spots gone but I still love it.Do you use the auto reels? I do.

I went mainly for river smallmouths or pan fish and on hot bright sunny days I went after gars.

Hi Larry
I went crazy buying equipment back when I was younger.I have all graphite rods by orvis, sage,Gloomis etc and my reels are from hardy, marryatt, abel etc.I have rods from 2 weight to 8 weight and the cheapest rod ,reel line combo is over $600 to over a $1000! I had an orvis cane (bamboo rod) that I bought used for $700(I ended up selling it,a friend kept bugging me to buy it so I sold it to him).I tell you this sport can get very expensive if you were like me at the time, young single and self employed.I always said to myself though that I would have this stuff for a lifetime, and when I got older with more responsibilities I would not be able (other half would kill you!)spend money like I did. But,the truth of the matter is that it's not what your holdin that matters it what's passin past the fish's eyeballs that counts!
I mainly fished in the Catskill mts for trout, but also fished the jersey shore for stripers and bluefish.I would check into that bamboo rod, thay all look alike but some are worth alot of money. One thing I do know ,I could tie all my rods together and they would still snap like a tooth pick if I hooked one of those blue catfish you and your friends are holding in those pictures!!Those bad boys are huge!!!! What do you use salt water rods and reels?

Those BIG fish in the pictures are like my fish stories, those were sent to me by a fishing friend,he found them on the net.

Even tho we fish for fish that big with freshwater rods and reels we haven't caught one that big yet.So for just up to 40 pounders useing 20 lb test on baitcasters(bass rods).

I will pass my flyrod on down to my grandsons, saling it would be like losing a friend.I have new bugs and flies that haven't passed in front of fisheye balls yet, hopefully the mouse like bug will catch a few bronze backs or loinsides.

Anyhoo ...... I fish ...... I fish ALOT ...... probably way more than I should ......... I dont do as much fly fishing as I used to but still manage to get 10 - 20 days of it in a year for trout and some steelhead. My game now is fishing the ocean and sound around washington for halibut, salmon, ling cod, cabazon, sea bass and just about anything else that swims!! Heres a pic of a silver (coho) salmon I caught that was only a few onces away from a state record.
