That flyer I posted was for the new guys who needed help with getting some jobs quick. It has worked for me for 6 years now, and judging from e-mails I get it has also worked for some of you.It is direct and gets to the point,no overselling of services or implying some benefit that never appears. As we speak I am having 10,000 full color, before after and all that jazz being printed.I intend to include it with my estimates instead of mailing them out.I will continue to use that flyer on a postcard and mail them out. They produce just as many leads as any other piece, but costs half to print and a flat rate of 20 cents(21 in a month) I have a bulk rate stamp but it 23 and up to mail a piece.Postcard mailing also enables you to mail out just on one street instead of having to mail 200 at a time. Most new guys don't have upwards of 50 cents to mail out a direct mail piece. That's how much mailing out a full color brochure will cost, after printing ,postage, setup charges, direct mail permits. And when I know that 97-98 of them will end up in the trash.Postcards are the way I go.

Mr.Knight,
My name is Christopher. After having quit my job (they owed me a substantial amount of money in verbal promises and were not willing to pay when it came time) I decided to get into business for self. I have a friend that does window cleaning-pressure washing and he seemed to make pretty good money at it with little effort (I always wondered how well one could do if they put real effort into it). Anyhow, I decided to purchase a 3700 psi cold water washer and all of the equipment to go with it. After I purchased this equipment I had 5000 flyers printed up and have distributed approx. 1500 of those. My response is not what I would have liked though. Only 2 calls. Pretty bad huh? I believe the problem is that I targeted the wrong area (2-5 million dollar homes) with the wrong marketing materials (2 page b/w flyers on standard green stock). Of the 2 calls that I did get I only landed one of the jobs. I believe one of the reason I did not land the other is due to not having any before/after photos. I could have used them to show how drastic of a difference pressure washing really makes. I have been registered with this forum for approx. 2 months now and have received very valuable information. Having extensive sales experience with a Fortune 500 company (Was their #1 salesman in the nation as a matter of fact) I know initial presentation and sales pitch are two of the biggest factors in landing a job. I am working extensively on this by referencing information that I find in this forum and using plain old common sense. What would really help me in my 'closing' percentage though would be before/after photos. Sometimes, I would bet, b/a photos alone sell the deal. My needs specifically are home (vynil, brick, wood, stucco), deck (wood, stone, concrete), Drive/Walkways (brick, stone, concrete). I could really use your help and it would be more than appreciated. I hope to hear from you soon and I thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Chris B.

Hiya Chris,

I noticed you said you were new in business and that you were targeting 2-5 million dollar homes. Have you lost your mind?

What experiance do you have to handle a deck that would come with a house like that? Is it PT cedar and how would you clean it?

I would seriously recommend that you hook up with someone that knows what they are doing and work with them for a while first. Even for free to gain some experiance. Learn what chemicals to use and get some hands on experiance. Power washing may look easy but theres a lot more than waving a wand around when cleaning a deck.

People living in those homes will take everything you own if you damage their property. They may even take stuff you thought about getting one day.

Read my website and all the material you can online and practice on your own deck before you try working on someone else's property.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk but your risking waaaay to much for such a little profit.

Henry,
Thank you for your input. Though I do not have much experience powerwashing residential properties I do have extensive experience in the industrial field (40,000 psi hydroblasting, halo-blasting, industrial coatings and finishes, offshore/submersible coatings, chemical stripping, high-rise rigging, etc..). I do believe I can use much of this knowledge and the contacts and resources that I have made in my previous field and apply it towards what I am aiming for now. That being full service estate maintenance. You see, I am quite thorough in that I resolve to apply myself to the fullest whatever my field be. I have been very successfull in all of my carrer paths and I attribute my successes directly to my resolve. I have exhaustively been reading and researching as much information as I can get my hands on regarding low-pressure pressure washing (as I am doing now at 6am).I would like to point out that I know my limitations and for now I am sticking with metal, concrete, brick and vinyl (and I am using H2O only, we have aquifers here.). I will move on to wood after I have gathered numerous manufacturers info. (density ratings, moisture content etc.) and suggestions, advice from others (such as yourself), and after extensive practice on my own deck.
I do agree with what you have written. Powerwashing is more than just waving a wand around. I have seen 1/4 steel cut with water pressure alone. Though the pressure we are dealing with in commercial and residential applications are not near as great, it strengthens the point.
I visited your web-site and am impressed. Very extensive it is. As are your services offered. Moreover, the certifications you hold are thourough. You are an outstanding example for those that wish to pursue this trade. It is obvious you take great pride in what you do. Job well done.
I am bookmarking your site so that I may contact you in the future. I look forward to speaking with you again.
Good day brother.

Chris

note: Honest and forthcoming yes! Jerk no. Thanks for the input. I look forward to your response. (any info. or tips concerning wood would be appreciated.)

UPDATE: I got a call the day after I put up the post and landed the second job I discussed in my earlier post. [white]

Chris

Hey Chris congrads on getting the other job. I'm glad you made your previous post about your experiance in pressure washing. From your last post, it looks like your doing things the right way but it didn't appear that way in the original post that I was replying to. That's why I made my comments the way I did. Power washing wood decks is mostly done by chemicals instead of using much pressure at all. I'm sure you have read about sodium hydroxide based strippers, neutrilizers and sealers. There is so much material out there to wade through and numerous decisions to make on what you want to offer your clients. Practicing on your own property is always the best way to start and gain experiance. I would also try contacting some others that are outside of your area but close enough to you that you could visit and possibly volunteer some time to learn how to do decks. I've seen a lot of guys read read read and then go do it without actual hands on experiance. They usually fight through it thinking, this is what they said in the book. Cause damage to the surface they are cleaning or just quit. Look around on all the boards and you can see how many companies close down. Some of them have also been doing this for years and they just can't make it in their area on power washing alone.

If you have any questions, I would be happy to help you out if I can just give me a call.
