Fuel Question

Is it ok to mix diesal and kerosene in the same fuel tank? Some of the service stations around here are selling kerosene quite a bit cheaper than diesal, but I've already got diesal in my fuel tank.
The owners manual for my rig says I can use either fuel, but does not mention mixing.

I would drain one totaly and then use the other but not mix them together. I'm pretty sure they wont mix without doing some damage. Different specs for each fuel. I do know k-1 burns cleaner that diesal. (wont soot up as bad) I think but not sure that one burns hotter than the other.

hope this helps

buy home heating oil. No road tax and its the same as diesel you buy from a gas station but no dye in it. The dye is how they can easyly tell if you paid road tax.
you dont need to pay the tax.

Tony,

No problem you can mix the two fuels!

The diesel will burn hotter more btu's per gallon, but the
kerosene will burn cleaner it is a more refined product.

Most of my local customers use red diesel fuel (off road diesel)

Normally kerosene is more expensive than diesel?

Thanks for all the input! Unfortunately, I don't have anyplace conveniant to get home heating oil or red dyed fuel. So what I will do is get whatever is cheapest at a given time. I don't figure it's worth it to spend time messing around to fill an 18 gallon tank, wasting a good hour. I'm just going to keep receipts and apply for the fuel tax credit at tax time.

Around here, this week, kero was at $1.29, and diesel was at $1.39 per gallon. I think the road taxes might be a little higher on the diesel here in Michigan, and that makes the kero a better deal.

Anyway, thanks again, but I'm sure the debate on this will continue.

i have two, 55 gal drum's and a hand pump
the heating oil supply co stops here when i call
i get billed once a month
when i go fulltime i will get a bigger tank
my oil prices change every day, so if i get a bigger tank i can buy more when its low.

Ron,
Do you operate out of your house? I do, and I don't want anything to do with storing quantities of stinky fuel oil in my garage. Actually, as it is, when I got my business license to operate out of my home, I had to meet with the local fire marshall and discuss what chems, and quantities I would be keeping on hand. He was worried that if I had a fire, half the neighborhood could get sick, or even an explosion that could take out the firefighters in one swoop. At the time, I was using all store bought chems, and didn't keep a whole lot on hand. Now, I buy all the individual chems in big pails and mix myself.

Now let's see, you've got two 55 gallon drums of fuel oil on hand, and I know you've gotta have plenty of caustics.....you're last name isn't McVeigh, is it? :)

i have a metal shed
holds 6 55gal drums
only caustic is dbn1430 and HF acid
its on a cement pad and no combustables near it unless you count the diesel
meny meny people have 250 gal tanks for home heating oil
whats the diffrence? about 35 cents a gal if you ask me.
