help with smeared mortar on bricks

Hi all. I have a job to do that I need some help with. this customer had her brick walk and brick knee walls repaired. It looks like someone wiped mortar all over the brick, the bricks are red but where the mortar is they are ghost white. I scrubbed the bricks about 60 of them with another brick which seemed to help for the thicker mortar, but still bright white haze. The bricks are mainly smooth, but have approx 1/8" dimples throughout. Bricks are approx 13 years old. Any help on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. What chems, pressure, tip, etc can I use. I already tried tsp, and medium pressure, and that didnt help. i'm afraid to use too much press. on the brick, but accepted job and need to make it right. No chance to make money on this one anyway, just want to live up to my word and do a professional job. thanks in advance for your help.

Mortar tags and smears can be easily removed with NMD80 - we do new construction brick on a regular basis. It's the most user friendly brick acid we've found and leaves a better final result than SureKleen or Vanatrol.

If you want to send me an email, I can give you the name of a highly qualified gentleman with decades of brick experience - given your location, I'm sure he can get you whatever you need :)

Go to your local lumber company and tell them your needing a acid to clean the tags and white ghost from brick.

There is a brick showroom in my town that stocks Proso co products ,I have not used Vanitrol like Celeste but am using 600 new masonary cleaner which is a little stronger than Vanitrol but safer on colored mortor. After searching through this site I decided on a product with hydrocloric instead of muratic acid also to minimize burns and short dwell time.

Take Celeste up on her offer and get that name. The person to whom she refers is an outstanding resource. Very knowlegable, very friendly and has the right chemicals you need.

From my experience over here you will need to do some serious preperation before putting any chemicals onto the bricks. Sounds like the bricklayers have 'sponged' the job to fill in all the joints in the old bricks, which is a great idea, cept it basically seals the face of the brick. We scrub as much of the mortar from the face of the brick using a bronze bristle brush (stops rusting of any kind later) and remove all mortar dags etc before applying any chemicals, usually hydrochloric. Keep the bricks wet before putting the chems on, and rinse before the bricks get a chance to dry. If allowed to dry they will develop a white 'haze' which is a pain to remove.
Anyways that's the downunder experience, maybe you guys have differing products and materials.

Hey we have one that melts it off like butter, call BR 549 and I'll tell ya where to get.

It seems downunder has it down pat moreso than upperstates, some around here replaces the Hy with Mur.

A Tag is a hump of mortor that has dried on the brick, they run from small to half dallor size mortor humps. It can be chipped off useing tools and in most cases can be lefted off useing chemicals and alittle psi.
