Okay........take the freebies off! You are in this to make money, right? Set up a referral program for your customers to EARN services from you by getting you work. If you're giving them a gas card right off the bat, they're already going to think you've inflated your price to get their business with "freebie".

Just my .02 before coffee :)

I agree with Celeste. Take off the "freebie" stuff. I like the D.I.R.T.Y. acronym layout. And yes, this is a "cheap" flyer. You may get some work from your effort, but I'd rethink passing them along. If you have a decent color printer and Microsoft Publisher (even Word), you could do much better.

If you start your marketing efforts out with "cheap looking" materials, biz cards, etc., that's the impression you'll give to your prospects. There are a lot of ways to produce inexpensive marketing materials that have high quality appearance, and make you look more professional. In my opinion, you're better off not handing out "cheap" materials and leaving the prospect with a bad, first impression.

Hey, it costs money to make money. But you don't need to spend a mint to look like one! Good Luck.

It would cost you maybe $400 to have a professional design a full color one page brochure and have 1000 copies of that brochire printed on 100 lb glossy stock. Max your credit card out, borrow money from your relatives, do whatever it takes. In all honesty, if you don't have the money or access to it, you probably should still be earning a paychek at a job. A successful business isn't about equipment or willingness or even know-how, its about sales and marketing of your product/service.

If you hand out this brochure I can guarantee every call you get is going to be under $150. (all three jobs you might land handing out a thousand of them). You have the skill to write an interesting copy. I like what you wrote, very clever. Now it just needs to be placed in a professioanl layout if you hope to see any results. (Everything from Call Us on down is fluff and won't sell a nickel)

Price you gotta setup a business plan, a marketing budget and have reserve cash for winter months. These are the miniumums. You also have to know how to price, have tenacity to constantly push on, and know how to close a sale. Business ownership is not for everyone, that is why 90% of startups fail in under 5 years.

Priceless,

What is your set up like. Don't spend too much on advertising if you are going to show up with an unprofessional set up. You will get more business when people see your rig in action. If you are serious take a small business loan, 5-10K and do it right. You will be more determined to make it work if you owe someone money.

Here is the setup i have right now in the process of changing around a little but this is how i bought it i don't think its to cheap of a setup so please don't assume because my flyer's are not the best that I'm a fly by night person. Just trying to make a little money so i can spend some in the advertising.Just the business has not picked up for us.When i get the name out there more we should get something.I did go to a professional with my ideas and he is making us one up in the next few days just trying to do it right.

Nice rig...when people see you doing work, I am sure they will approach you and ask for an estimate. It takes time, but after a few years it all pays off. It's good you have another job on the side, be patient.

Best of luck, and I'm sorry if I offended you by asking about your equipment.

You didn't offend me but thank you for the compliment and we all will work as a team. I only been in business for a yr or so i know it takes time and money to make money but we need to be patient and let it build.

YARD SIGNS. Small investment for big letters that don't move. You probably did your families' homes last year when you started up, but get some signs and go do them again :) Your phone will ring when people see you working - it always works like that. I know gas is high but go drag your rig around town (get a sign for that tank too) Rigs sitting in driveways make folks wonder why you can't find work. Wash your own house if you can't get out and drive :)

I agree with Celeste...When I first started out, if I did not have a job I would still be at the local WaWa (convenience store) at 8 am getting coffee with every other contractor, so people would see my rig. I would then drive down Ocean drive from Ocean City to Cape May (about 25 miles) and then back home up route 9 (about 25 miles). I always returned home to messages on my machine. One time I recieved 9 calls.
