hose repair

Hey Wiz,
A few weeks back I found out my hose had ruptured, from ice inside the hose, Can this hose be 'spliced' by cutting out the ruptured section and then adding hose end fittings to each new 'fresh' end and then placing a swivel between each 'new' end ? What do you think ? ...Thanks !

My honest opinion is
"Throw it away and don't think about it twice."
Reason? The hose is weak all over inside.
Is it worth the risk of injury to you or one of your employees?
Is your workmans comp and insurance up to date? Someone can get hurt by it!
The hose will continue to be a neusence to you the ends will pop off again and again.
If the machine they use is not the exact type for that hose the swedge will not hold.
The murphys law will get you on this one. It will break at the most important time.

I have had alot of hoses rupture but never from ice......I used to goto the Industrial Hose and Hydraulics shop near me, and they charge about 8 bucks a crimp. Now the small engine mechanic I work for when I am slow has the machine so I get them alot cheaper...lol. Good luck.

Hey Barry,
We use 5,800psi hose, and at a $1 plus per foot we don't waste it. I've had hose that wasn't a week old, have a bad crimped end on it and start leaking under pressure. We just strip the hose off the reel, take it to the hose shop, and have them cut about 6 inches off each end and crimp new ends on.There are a lot of different reasons why a hose will blow,if it gets run over,if it gets pulled to hard,if it bends less than the radius rated on the hose say a loop less than a 5 inch circle, all these things and more contribute to failing hose. To sum it up if you have a hose that the outter cover looks good on, and one of the ends starts leaking on replace the ends. But if you have a hose that has the cover all tour up on, odds are the wire is shot in the hose anyway than I would think a new replacement. In your case with ice in the hose I would recemend a replacement, its hard to tell how many places the hose froze. For every section the hose had ice in it the wire could be broken, you might fix that section just to have it blow agine 3 feet from that area.

Well like I said, I never had one blow from Ice.....but I agree when I have had them flattened by a big truck or just busted I always cut at least 6" or so, when I cut it (as I crimp my own) I check the wires for rust, if they are still rusty I cut more. This is just my experience from a southern state....it may be better to just get a new one but ask the people that crimp what they think...good luck.

Hi Barry,

We have had our share of hose failures over the years. Some have been ugly!

We have always tried to purchase hose rated higher than what we plan to operate it with, both in pressure and temperature. They say that heat puts the most stress on all of our equipment including the hose.

We are currently using hose rated for 5800 psi. Our unit seldom runs over 3000 psi. We ran 4000 psi hoses for years. We have reduced the number of failures since switching to a even higher rated hose!

Yes, I would replace the hose that you have, but I would also make arrangements so that none of your equipment would feel sub freezing temperatures in the future.

I had a couple of hoses over the years that were relatively new and they got a pin hole in them. When that happens I have my local powerwashing company crimped the hose for around $8. It beats throwing out a new 100' hose valued at over $100 because of a pin hole. Of course if a hose is worned then just throw it out for safety reasons-John-
