I am not sure how it works in FL but in Ohio it is based on payroll. If you have little to no payroll you pay the minimum, which in Ohio is $10.00 for a half year. You can also join an MCO to get a better rate rather than going through the state BWC. It is also something you should have not just for commercial jobs.

Here in KY, My Minimum(translated -- No coverage for me) is $800 paid in full upfront. I hate Workers' comp. But, can't legally work without it. We pay high because of all the lazy cry babies that stub a toe and file false claims to get a free ride. You and I get stuck with the bill.

It is $10.00 for a half a year but that is with no payroll. I am sure in most states it is based off of payroll and job class. Call your state to find out for sure. I dont know why you would even work or have workers with out it.

Your customers may or should be asking for a certificate of coverage, it does not look good when you say you don’t have it whether you are required to have it or not.

I am in Florida and I have found that it is nearly inpossible to get any insurance company or payroll company to do workers comp for my small operation usually just myself and one other person. My insurance agent says it just not worth it for the agent. I have called countless ins. agents and payroll companies and they either say they do not do it or they give me an insane premium amount in the thousands with monthly payments based on payroll that I must have a payroll. So of anyone else has found otherwise in Florida I would sure like to know.. I basically stick with the custom builders that have no problem accepting the workmens comp exempt card aslong as you have the million liability.

I use a staffing agency to pay my help through. It cost a little more, but it is cheaper than taking out a WC policy and the help is insured. I pay my help 10.00 through the staffing agency and they charge me 16.00 / hour.

A comp policy would cost me 3000.00 a year for 1 employee. I find the help that I want to hire, then I send them to the staffing agency to fill out the paperwork. The staffing agency will provide verifacation of WC for my clients that require it.

On jobs that require WC on me, I pay myself minimum wage through the staffing agency.

Workman's Comp in Florida.

In Florida, I found that Southeast Personnel Leasing out of Holiday, Florida was my way to go.
