Business has been sooo slow. I had to make sure my phone was plugged in since I haven't heard it ring in a few weeks!

What are you guys and gals doing now that the weather is getting cold? Seems like no one is thinking about cleaning up their houses.

Does anyone have marketing tips geared towards indoor work, warehouses, stores, etc. I'm not the greatest salesperson, but I'm creative with flyers . . . just don't know who to target.

If your lucky like old Glenn there you'll be run over with new construction.Its not any easy market to crack but after you get in your in.

Hey Bigboy,

To answer your question, I have a surface cleaner, turbo, hot water and a sand blaster. All good equipment, but nothing to use it on!

Any tips on marketing ourselves to new construction? I enjoy surface cleaning warehouse floors which I've been called on through the Yellow Pages. How can I market myself to others?

Used to have a lot of fleet washing accounts but gave them up when I became overwhelmed with residential work in the summer. Sorry I lost the accounts, but when I look back it was little $$ for backbreaking work in freezing cold weather!

What are my alternatives to make it through the winter . . . I need to feed the kids!

You should have make enought though the warmer months to put ya though the coolder months if your going to do residential work.Fleet washing back breaking

ya most have been brushing,I find that there surface cleaning to be backbreaking b/c ya standing up most of the time and fleet washing has alot of moves.If ya wasn't making enough $$ you were working to cheap,I can make more $$$$ aday fleet washing then what most make a week working where theres no windows.I like cleaning so I clean several different trades,the only time my buss slows down is when I slow down,or hide for awhile

New construction work will be coold also,it goes on all year long.Just alittle slower in the coolder months b/c of freezing.It will also be muudy alot of times if ya doing brick n.c. and if your doing the inside also there will no heat alot of times.I like washing in the cooolder months b/c ya sure ain't doing to have no heat stroke.You already know how to market yourself b/c of the overwhelmed.If it was me(you already know how to wash trucks),I'd go get me some trucks to wash all year long and feed the kids though the coolder months,just don't do them cheaper then what ya making an hour now.I wash trucks all year and in the warmer months I can wash homes,in the colder months I can wash farm eqt..You already know how to clean so why let ya kids do without when you own a pw.I don't mean for this to sound smart or hateful in NO way,but I think if a fellow owns a pw he can make a living all year if he wants to,washing what ever.
They are alot of different contractors,bricks,frame,roof,finishing and ect. that bid on the homes the realator is building.Each contractor will have to cleanup or hire it done so he figures it in his bid.I would go to the realator and offer my services to him not the contractor,that way he can have this on his bid sheet that he will have has own cleanup crew saving the contractor time and saving money himself by getting a cheaper bid from the contractor....if need be put me back in line.............C-ya

Everything you said makes perfect sense, but easier said then done!

The reason I don't make enough during the summer to hold me through the winter is because there is a LOT of competition here in NY . . . can't be too greedy with high prices. I'm a one man operation due to bad experience with helpers so this slows down my production.

Don't get me wrong, business is not slow now because I DON'T want to work in the cold. It's because I've only marketed myself for residential jobs which no one is interested in right now and the commercial jobs have always come through the Yellow Pages.

I NEED HELP getting the word out that I'm available for ANYTHING! I don't know how to begin marketing to commercial areas. You mentioned real estate . . . do you just walk in and talk to someone or do you have a brochure you can share?

I don't need criticizm or reprimanding, I need some ADVICE!

Scort of figured ya'd see it that way,thats why I put if need be,haha.
Man it would take awhile to tell ya now to market but you just don't walk-in.You know how you feel if someone just walked in while you were eating and wanted to talk you out of your money.When you say any thing you are already on the right tract,now just target what ya want.Surface,hoods,fleets,anything,you will need to ask alot of Q'tions before you talk or walk in.Find out all you can on the decesion maker,his first name,his likes,his needs,the buss and get a appointment.I think your best days for saleing is tuesday,Wednesday with wed. being the best,between 10 and 11,2 to 4.If your lucky they any have heard about you but what your doing when your finding out all you can about the company is showing an interest in their buss,which shows them you know what ya talking about.They have never seen how good a cleaner you are so what you are trying to do is sale yourself and that comes with the knowlebge of his buss,its better then any old flyer.
You know these little desk calendars,will everybody likes one and it maybe a good marketing ideal for this coming year..I'm lucky I do not have to sale nomore or market b/c my accounts do it for me.Just like tonite a farmer called said he was done told him it may be in Dec. before I could get to him,which was ok but he had another farmer he could get me if I wanted it.Because of those words I love this buss,IF YOU WANT IT.Those words use to be I"LL TAKE ANY THING.Find you a target and key on it,it can be anything................C-ya

I am just finishing some stray decks that came in and some driveway sealcoating...now I am about to start my gutter cleaning.right now I am up to about 225 @ an average of $49 a pop.by the end of november I usually do about 275.I got all these customers from flyers I put out at the beginning of october.This gives me money for the winter and then the cycle starts all over again.

What can you do?


1. Hood cleaning.
2. Interior floors in restaurants (bathroom, kitchens and dry storage).
3. Parking garages.
4. Dot contracts removing graffiti.
5. Graffiti removal.
6. Casino’s.
7. Fleet washing.
8. Large ware housing.
9. Heavy equipment.
10. Flat work, guys in cold whether places only loose about 30 to 40 days all winter.


I’m sure there are lots of things you can try.

How many things can we do to market our pressure washing business?

1. Yellow page adds
2. Cold calling
3. Personnel selling
4. Faxing
5. Mass mailing
6. Free demos
7. Giving a customer a free service in hopes he will use you for regular maintenance
8. Video demos
9. Photo demos
10. Brochure.
11. Mailers {value pack, penny saver, newspaper, ect}
12. Free building washes
13. Cash for referrals
14. Thank you cards
15. Trade Shows
16. Radio, TV
17. Signs on trucks
Add to the list, how many different crazy things you have tried?

None of this is easy, but the key word is consistency. If you try one of these things for six weeks, and every day take the time to do it, you will see results.

I don’t feel that way, I believe with a good marketing attack he can get 20% maybe more over a period of six months to a year. Remember consistency, we see every customer on the average of five times before they become our customers. No one time hitters, keep those, monthly accounts 7 day, 15 day, 30 day, 90 day.
I really don’t want to deal with customers that can’t use me on a service contract.


High pressure has four basic things he can do with these numbers.


1. Throw them away.
2. hood cleaning
3. flat work & interior floors
4. building & awning washes


We have given him the advice and offered the help.

Don’t come on the weekends, I don’t work, Scott could probably take you out on the weekends. That’s the big reason I don’t like fleet washing. All these truck, needing to be cleaned on down time. I like spending the time with my kids.

I will fly over for the tailgate. Your list shows what a market everyone has if he just looks around. The problem is when you see all the opportunity, a fog rolls in and one gets out of focus fast-he going 100 miles per hour and the prop not in the water. He must focus and go after a selected market or markets.

To answer Glenns question about the number of gutters I do every year.Yes that is 225 to 275.I start off with about 200 sales letters that I send out to people I did last year,of that 200 I get back about 150-180.I always address the sales letters to the name of the customer OR CURRENT RESIDENT you would be surprised how many new home owners take the service.I then put out a new round of flyers and that brings it up to 275.I get a lot more calls than that but If I can't walk on their roof I don't do it.My prices range from $39 to $79.There is a company around here that has 1000s of gutter cleaning customers and they charge about $90 for an average so you can see that if you consider that around here about 75% of the people hire someone to clean their gutters, I do real well.If I hired people to work for me I could get as many as I wanted,right now I do everything myself.I can clean between 12 and 16 a day and I work everyday from November 10th on EVEN ON THANKSGIVING DAY!
I usually finish around DEC 5th.and yes with at least 11 grand! Some days it's just too cold so I blow it off.

Got your average at about 15,676 that’s great. to bad they don’t need that all year. no gutters in phoenix, at least not on 99% of the buildings. Have a friend in Washington that just uses a blower and only works three months all year. Commercial accounts mostly. He’s not rich, I do envy the time he spends with his kids.

Name the place. Friday through Sundays are bad for me. I don't workon Sunday, it is the day for Church and Family. Friday I watch my two littlest kids all day so that my wife can play, err, volunteer at school.
BTW I think I saw one of your trucks at a Texaco on the corner of Gilbert and University. It was a blue 80's model Ford PU. There was another guy at a station one mile east at the same time. What a contrast. A 2000 PSI cold water machine going through a doucle heater and not a hose reel to be found. Pretty rough looking.
