Ideas needed for Sodium hyrdoxide

Do most of you use a premixed soulition of sodium hydroxide to wash houses? I have learned that a lot of you use a 12% mixture. Do you make this on your own or can you buy it. How or where can I get it to wash my house?

I'm not a magician. (although my wife thinks I am!) I got a call from a guy a few months ago wondering the same thing. Apparently this guy is a real good one.

sodium hydroxide is a degreaser depending on strength, it is the main ingredient in my truck wash soap and house wash. sodium hypochlorite is bleach, also used on houses for killing algae. i've tried the higher concentrations of chlorine, but 99 cents a gallon household bleach works just as good for me and i've been doing this for a long time.

Thanks for the help. I thought I was getting some of the terms mixed up. What do you reccomend for a house wash? Chlorine, Bleach, or the powerhouse stuff from SunBrite?

I have to disagree with what Jeff says about store bought bleach being as effective as chlorine, not to mention the price is about the same, depending on your location.

There is about twice the amount of active ingredient and pool chlorine is usually fresher as it does'nt sit on a shelf for who knows how long. No disrespect to Jeff, I would just to see alot of the newcomers steered in the wrong direction.

As for housewashing recipes, do a search, there is plenty of info on these boards. Just try a few and see what works for you. Good luck.

I learned the hard way that what a product says it does and what it really does can be two different stories. I currently use a product sold by my supplier as a general degreaser. at different ratios for different applications of course. I have tried many brands but the one i use I have gotten to know well and it works the same way every time.

Part of my learning curve included my chemical selection. That, along with pressure, distance, temperature etc are things that the pros here can and do suggest, but trila and error (within reason) are the best training possible. That is not to say we go off and do it all without any knowledge, but once we have a foundation that, with some serious searching and reading of this forum, we are meant to find what works for US.

Now I need to learn the difference between a Coral snake and a King snake. it is major snake seaon here in Florida and I am seeing them everywhere. They damn sure hate chlorine...sends em running out from under whatever they are hiding under when I go to work. and when they come out, they're pissed!

Coral snake-Red band meets yellow band. King snake-Red band meets black band. The old saying goes, Red meets black, friend of jack, Red meets yellow, kill the fellow.

How funny was that! Actually, I need to get abook and READ it ((hijacking a thread now) cause I see bookoo snakes I am not familiar with. first year here I almost picked up a cute little brown snake, then his little tail starting wigglin back and forth...said to mysel "Sefl" I cll me that when I am talking to me.." no snake yo know of shakes his tail but a rattler"...that snake aint got rattles....turns out, good thing I didn't pick it up. sometimes living in florida is like living on a different planet. Pigmy Ratlle snake? They pack onehelluva punch [getout]

Why not hit it with the water pressure.....should take care of a snake......I have done that trick with bees on a job before.

if red touches yellow it will kill a fellow, thats how i was taught to identify a coral snake. red doesn't touch yellow on the similar looking king snake.

back to the bleach thing, i've been doing this for over ten years and everyone has their own opinion. everybody has their own method, but i do a two step wash on houses. i have used the stronger chlorine, but i still prefer store bought lemon scented beach, with a little lemon scented detergent in it. and then i follow with a sodium hydroxide based detergent to remove the chalkiness, dirt, gutter stains, and red mud stains which is a problem here in georgia. then i pressure wash the house inch by inch. my customers pay for a pressure wash, not a chemical bath and rinse. the detergent also cleans windows nicely. i've never killed grass or shrubbery with the store bought stuff. i've even diluted the bleach before running downstream and it still worked good. i do use a 20% injector.

it works for me and i have a happy customer base that is growing, so i doubt i'll ever change chemicals or method. I am getting too old for this stuff, and the change i may soon make is to sell out. good help is hard to find and i'm one of those that really prefers to do it myself, that way i know its right.
