Life-Guard Wood Sealant ????????

I bid on a deck job through a gen contractor and got the job. After I got the job cleaned I found out that the customer had his on sealer. I was like cool, more profit margin for me.

I found the product to be Life-Guard cedar tone. It has on the can that it prevents graying for up to 4 years and waterproofs for up to 15. Yeah Right.

When I tried to apply this product it is not taking to the wood very well. (I have been using Wolmans with no problems for 2 years)

Checked the can, it was clearanced from Lowes (reg 115 now $54) and I moved the flammable sticker to find the date printed on the can. It was 1-21-98, the product is almost 3 years old. I know that this is probably just old sealer.

I have heard that it was pulled off of the shelf for EPA reasons. It contains ester, ketane and other petroleum distallate products. Smells like paint thinner.

Thanks for any info that can be provided.

Make sure when you clean any deck, including decks you feel never had stain on them. You need to remove the mill glaze and or previous sealer or stain from the wood. A general cleaning in most cases will not remove mill glaze or sealers. You must strip them. It will prevent the new sealant from sinking into the wood if not removed properly.
