How does the Dept of Labor view this? I know that on CA work permits (required when you are under 18), a minor is not allowed to operate any machinery. A pressure washer would fall in that category.
Even as an owner, I am sure you can't violate that law if it is applicable to your State.

I actually called the Arizona Dept. of Labor, and they were good with a teen operating a pressure washer. So the laws can vary from state to state.

Celeste,

If this boy is anything like our kids, he might eat you out of home.... LOL

Between my two laborers (Roger & Jon) being Marines and the other kids, trust me, I will not notice feeding one more - I might be a Southern gal, but I cook in full blown Italian family quantities! LOL

Ive been looking at pressure washers and i found one that i liked (link below). I want around 3000psi,4gpm and pressure regulator. Is there anything else i need to consider? Also i had an idea for a job. I was a the movies (new rave theater opened near my house near nice neighborhoods in a nice area near a target and other stuff). I was standing outside and i stepped in a peice of gum and realized that after only 2 weeks of being open, there was gum all over the place. Because its in a nice area and they obviously put money into the concrete's appearance (they put in tile things in certain areas of the concrete) i would think they would want the gum pressure washer every now and then. What exactly is involved in cleaning gum? Pressure/gpm needed? Chemicals? Should I/can I use a rotary surface cleaner? I figured this would be a very good job to earn money and get my name out there. I could work something out where i give them a reduced price if they let me advertise somehow. Is this a good idea? I am going to get a buisness licence very soon.

For gum , just make sure you've got hot water, your 25 degree tip, and get close, hit it at an angle, and up it comes. Good selling point: Get the gum up before it has a chance to create a stain that will be a real PITA to get out.

There are many creative ways to market yourself. Be careful about offering rate reductions. Word could get out that you do that and people could start to expect it out of you, and hold out until you cave. It's pretty much a judgement call. I've said it many times: What works for one guy may not work for another.

Nice website. I can see one or two things that MAY be a problem, but here's the thing that jumped out at me: I clicked on the "about us" part at the homepage. In big letters at the top, it says, "If it's worth doing right, it's worth doing yourself". Good advice, but what does this say to the potential customer visiting your site? It says, "Don't hire me, you should do it yourself." Great format and design, but I'd remove that quote, and fast! Good luck.

I applaud your efforts! Never let that entrepreneurial spirit die, it's what built America!

A few comments on your website...

- Don't underline anything that is not a hyperlink.

- Change your email address to use your domain name (sales @ hppressurewashing.com).

- Adjust the width so that horizontal scrolling is not required for those of still set to 600 x 800; not everyone has made the jump to 800 x 1200. (You're probably too young to remember 400 x 600...)

- Before and After's link does not need an apostrophe (plural, not possesive).

- Make it clear from the beginning where you are (city and state).

Huntsville! I am from there...good ole southern folks who try and help each other out.

This one thread has been such a pleasure to read! To me, it encompassed what WE do. A young man comes with his idea of becoming a member of our trade and finds support, offers for training (Sure wish I had that offer...), gentle advcie from the seasoned ones, reminders about what it takes as well as encouragement to follow through on his original dream.

Your posts read better than many on here at over twice your age (no offense to us old farts)..mine included. It shows you are well spoken, well writen...and well advised. You have yourself a formula for success right here. I am proud to learn of a young man who will no doubt do our industry a lot of good. I appreciate the fact you came here first and were not shot down by some cranky people who forgot that feeling of day dreaming about success. I thought your website was good (can you build one for me?) and it seems that you will be the guy that makes us jealous! Good luck!
