making old and new match...

I have two jobs coming up in the next two weeks that involve one half of the deck being old, beat, with a failing finish........and the other half about 6 months to a year old.

Anyone have any tricks to make them match better when I'm all done? I have considered mixing a slightly different color for one half, but I'm not sure I want to play that game............what would u do?

Mike,

I had a customer that had just moved into a new house and the deck and rails were different ages. There was section on the deck that had been covered by othe building marterials.

I used the Wolmans deck cleaner mixed with a little Sodium Hydroxide and then sealed with Wolmans F&P. Looked good.

I priced a deck today that has the deck at 12 yrs old and the rails and pickets less than 1 yr old.

Mike,

I have exact same job as you coming up,and only thing i can think of is this.I will apply ready seal by hand on the old part and spray on 2 heavy coats of light brown with pump up on the new part.Reason for this i noticed its a lot lighter when applied by hand and a lot darker by pump up,so hopfully it will match some what.

Sealed one of the decks yesterday...........I decided to do nothing special, and just seal both halves the same. He will have to deal with it if they don't match. So far, they don't look all that different, but I think in a couple weeks you will see the difference a bit more.

Here's a pic. The section in the back with the bar and hottub is the new wood. I did nothing to the hottub.
