I have a Question.

As you probably know Flags are in big demand right now.
I went to the Flea Market Today and saw bandanas that usually sell for $1 Selling for $20 just because they had something about Pride in America or the Flag on them.
I saw a cheep flag made in Pakastan that was mass produced printed on cheep fabric selling for $75-$90 depending on which Arab was selling them. Normaly they would sell for $5.
Wal-mart and K-mart are sold out.
The Army Navy Surplus Store sayes they will get a shipment from Overseas in 20 days. Their price will also be at a rediculous mark up.

Now here is my Question:

I have a real nice flag.
But ,I don't Know if it is appropriate to fly it.
It is the Flag that covered my Fathers Casket at his Funeral.
It was Presented to us by the US Air Force for the Military Funeral.
It was given as a memory of my Fathers Service to his Country.
He served in WW2 and the Korean War.
This flag is about 5ft x 7ft and the stripes are sewed on individualy.
The stars are embrordered on and it is a nice Flag.

Seams like it would be an honor to my Fathers service to fly this Beautiful Flag.
And an Honor to My Country to show my support by flying a Flag.
Should I fly this Flag?

hey wiz .....

i would fly that Flag with proud and maybe even make a sign so everyone that see's it know"s where it came from......

keep looking for a Flag to fly in the mean time. then replace it with the new one so you can keep your Dad's Flag in great shape... i know it would be a pain in the bottom but i would fly it wheather permitting........i would take it down when rain was in the air...........just my thought ...

Beings your father served in the military...If it were my father(he is gone too) I feel he would WANT me to fly it...BUT I would do only during nice weather and would try to find a replacement...Maybe after you find a replacement, you could fly his flag indoors...Just a thought.

Fly it, Fly it, Fly it!! The flag is all about meaning and yours has special meaning beyond most. If your Dad was in the forces as my family is and has been; He would'nt want any store bought flag flying when His could be waving atop a tall mast. Half mast until Sept.22 though. Fly it with Pride, and God bless America!

Interesting facts: All of the flags used for military funerals have been flown over the White House. There are workers at the Capitol whose job it is, to hoist flags up and down all day. The flags are flown for about 10 seconds.

WW2 veterens are dying at a rate of 800 per day. Yes, that is the correct number! 292,000/year.

My father recently passed, and we had the local VFW perform a service, 21 gun salute and all. Anyway....they left me with a little flyer that contained these facts, as well as a donation reminder.

I have thought about flying my dads flag too, and decided not to, but rather leave it neatly folded in a triangle, as it was presented to me.

It is a personal decision to fly or not. You will never likely establish a quorum asking us power washers.

When you are all done flying it, and want to pack it away, I'm sure if you took it to a VFW or something, you could find someone that knows how to fold it back into that nice triangle for you.....

I retired 3 years ago after 21 years in the military. My retirement Flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol and over my last Command. Its sealed in my shadow box with my medals. I can't fly it without destroying the shadow box. I have another flag to fly. In my humble opinion you should fly that flag just be careful that someone doesn't steal it. I think your Father would like to see it fly (I know I would).

Like your father, my second uncle has passed away. He retired from the service, and I was quite fond of him. We would talk for houres when I was little. He has no family of his own, so my grandmother recieved the flag and had no idea of what to do with it. She gave it to my father who too didn't know what he would do with it. I decided that I would like to have it as a vetern my self, for it has many good memories of my uncle, and also of the us military of which I served prowdly. After the tragic terroristic attack on the Us, I fiound it only fitting to fly it from my flag poll in memory of those who died September 11, 2001, and also for the memory of those who died befor. Granted many of the people didn't die in the name of "US SERVICE"... But didn't they!?!
The flag is a great symbol of our great nation, and I plan to fly it night and day, rain or shine untill all of the people and bodies have been recovered from within the rubble. I may even fly it until retribution has been satisfactorily gained for all of those who have lost there lives in this event.

To make a long story longer.

Fly it like you are proud to be an American...I am!!!

Hi Wiz,
I know this is a resopnse to an old tread, but I an new to this board and wanted to share my thoughts on this matter.

Something like this is a very personal matter. It sometimes helps to hear the viewpoint of others but the final decision is up to you. I dont know what your decision was, but I know if you made it based on what you felt in your own heart, then it was the right one.

Shortly after the attack I was asking myself the same question. I wanted to show my support as well, but could find a flag anywhere. Wasnt sure about flying my fathers burial flag, didnt know if it would be disrespectfull to fly such a sacred symbol. After some thought, I decided to fly it, whether anyone else thought it was disrespectfull or not, because that flag ment something special to me, much more so than if I had gone and purchased one. I flew it PROUDLY, in rememberence those who died on Sept. 11, in rememberence of my father, and as a tribute to the countless soles who have made the ultimate sacrifice to give us the freedom that we now enjoy. It is great to live in a nation where you have the freedom to make personal choices like this. I know in my heart, that in years to come, my son will still have the freedom to fly the flag, that will one day be presented to him, if he so chooses, and I would be very honored and proud of him for doing so.

Just my thoughts,
