This is in regards to my picky account!! 7 Sleepers, 5 Trailors, & 1 24' Box Truck..... Acidized, soaped, broamed, removed every srtinkin' bug and even the smoke on the trailors which is all a part of the job untill the owner still picks them apart. At which time I told him that I am not "detailing" them for $25.00 a piece! TOTAL CHARGE= $325.00-50.00(labor)-62.50(chemicals)-24.00(fuel)which comes out to 188.5 in profit for 6hrs of washing?!?!?!? Which equals 31.42 per hr for myself. Nothing like my other fleet accounts. What is industry standard profiy margin for fleet washing and should if I keep the account should I bump the $$$ per unit for all the extra time?

I get 30 on tractors and 30 for the trailers if washed weekly or every two weeks.

Your price is sorta standard for small contractors, the larger contractors are even cheaper then what your charging.

The account sounds like someone wanting to get them really clean before they change your wash from weekly or every two weeks to something like monthly.

When two stepping and if it does not clean the tractor the brush comes out with a 10 dallor more charge on the bill per brushed truck. To me brushing is a extra step in the cleaning which cost more for a one man team.

Your timing is about right for 7 rigs if its a one man team,a little slow for helper or helpers.

You forgot about 100 other things as COGS and burden. Why does it take $65.00 in materials for a total of 13 pieces, and 6 hours for 2 guys to wash them? With 2 guys that’s an average of about 1 piece per hour or $25.00/ hour. $25.00 per unit is not a bad price, but it should only take max 2 hours. Profit margins should be around 15 - 20%, but you have to know your TRUE COST of doing business. Not just labor, chemicals, and fuel.

p.s.
It is trailers not trailors.

I agree with Eric; $65 in chemical cost is WAY too high. You should be looking at least half of that, probably even closer to 1/3rd or 1/4th of that depending on the filth. Plus, how does it take 6 hours to wash a dozen pieces? Two guys should have that done in an hour, certainly no longer than an hour and a half, even if they are minted out. If you fix those two areas I think $25 per unit actually sounds pretty good!

I prefer to look at jobs at profit margin, adn 15 to 20% is VERY low by my standards. I think that at the worst, with employees doing most of the work, I run about a 33% profit margin. I like it closer to 40%. But then, some people consider me small potatoes.
