pump locking up?

hey guys, i've been working on this problem for a little while without much success. I'm new to all this so if there is any information you need please let me know. Please excuse my lack of power washing-lingo

I've got an old B&S 18hp vanguard motor with a GP-TS2021, i'm not sure what brand/make/model the unloader is. This unit ran for years and years without a problem...recently the pump would stop moving...causing the belts to roast on the engine pulley. I havent noticed any consistancy as to when it locks up (while under load, idle, etc). I can move the pump pulley freely without the belts on it, it also started right up and ran after new belts were installed, a few hours later it locked up and started roasting them again.

When I called around, a few people suggested that the pump was on its way out. I purchaced a new one and threw it in just like the old one was, along with some new belts. I believe i got about 2 hours out of it before it started locking up again.

After some more research i found that it could be the unloader. The original one has a plastic knob-thing about 3" long with a nylon locknut on top (sorry, i couldn't find a name on it). I figured it cant hurt to have a spare so i bought a new one, except this one lets all the pressure out of the hose when you arent on the trigger. After about an hour of use with this one i lost a considerable amount of pressure (guessing 50-60%) and I noticed that whenever i let off the trigger, the pump makes the belts chirp.

Can anyone think of anything that would fix this? I have no idea what i'm doing (if you couldn't tell)

I had that happen to me a few years ago, the machine just stopped running at first I thought the motor locked up. I removed the pump and the motor ran fine. Let the water run out of the pump put back on, started up and ran for a few seconds than once pressure build up the motor stopped again. I found the pump sezed up once pressure builded up. Took it apart and found most orings fried got new pump problem was fixed. You can buy a pump rebuild kit from the manufacture if you have experience in rebuilding them.

The "belt chirp" could be caused by loose belts.

It sounds like there is a chirp when the unit is
put under load.

Some questions come to mind:

-1- What size nozzle are you running?

-2- What is your unload pressure?

-3- What is your operating pressure?

-4- What model flow unloader are you running? [hello]

Thanks for the replys, the pump has about 6 hours on it right now so i'm thinking/hoping thats not it.

I'll double check the belts and make sure they are properly tightened.

I will reply with all the info later tonight (after i figure it out :) )
