Q On my Home Kitchen Vent

Hey all

I replaced my old range with a new one a few weeks back and am getting ready to do the vent hood this week coming up.

We do a good job of keeping the vent hood clean and always clean the filter, I'm just wondering if something should be done to the rest of the vent pipe? It's a 15 year old home and never has been done.

So not being to sure about this part I welcome your opinions and any tips a fellow member here mite need to do if necessary.

Thanks Tim

Is the fan located at the hood or on the roof? Home exhaust ducts with the fan at the hood are typically (99%) round duct that is connected by slip joints. It is never water tight and actually leaks like a sieve, using a pressure cleaner is not recommended. Cleaning round duct with a scraper is not easy and will never be perfect. A dryer duct brush is probably your best bet. If the fan is on the roof, you might be able to examine the ductwork from the roof, but most of the time it will still be a residential system which is not designed to be cleaned. I have seen WWII era homes with exhaust ducts that have never been cleaned and never will be.

Thanks Grant

Fan's at the botton of the hood. I'll not stress about it then...

I guess if it was needed, I would think a ton of work would be around for this type of residentail service.

Thanks again

Tim,

Commercial kitchens are the usual ones cleaned by us hoods. Where you find commercial cooking setups with stainless grease filters and type 1 ducting is in exclusive hi-rise apartments/condos in NYC and other big towns, where they have a chef who comes in for regular soirees. Your big estate type manor homes and the like. Old money, NBA, NFL and new money. You must wear shoe covers and walk softly. These stainless steel kitchens are setup to resemble their favorite restaurants, and I don't mean Mcdonalds. You deal with the chef or the butler.
