Question about CWF

ALL-BRITE

Hi All
I have a deck that I am quoting that is currently suppose to sealed with Cwf 2 yrs ago. Suprisingly it is still in good shape. I believe mostly because of the shade that it is in. After looking at it I do not feel that it should be completely stripped only cleaned and touched up with another coat. Anyway question is can I just clean and brighten it . Then top coat it with 1 or 2 coats?
This is not our normal sealer but loks like the best route to take at the moment. Anything to look out for? Thanks again Tim

Tim,

Good to see you again.

I disagree somewhat. I think it should be stripped off and you start fresh. If you retain that customer, and they want you back two years from now, what are you going to do then? It will be much harder down the road to strip off multiple applications of CWF. Been there and done that.

How many coats of CWF do you think you can put on and the deck still look decent?

Get rid of it while you still can........

My 2 cents.

CWF can be one of the most difficult sealers to remove. I've done it several times, and dread each and every one. I've found Wolmans Deck Strip to be the most effective, full strength. Sometimes, it has to be applied, and washed twice, for best results. Don't forget that a brightener, such as oxalic acid, needs to be applied to neutralize and brighten the wood, after it is cleaned. The Wolmans is strong, and very brutal to the wood.

I would also warn the customer that it is possible that not all the CWF will come out. Whenever I have to resort to the strongest of chemical strippers, I always make it clear to the customer that there is also a possibility of some furring up, as well. They either have to deal with that, or be willing to pay you to sand afterwards.

I have never seen good results recoating with CWF. In fact, the only time I ever see that product hold out decent, is in the shade.

Get rid of it while you can.

Wet the deck, Run Wolhmans full strenght out of a garden sprayer, Powerwash, Nuetralize.....you should be good to go. Let the stripper set for at least 15min.

Do the Rails first, Clean - then apply to the floor - you don't want it drying on you.

Make sure you charge them appropriately for it also!

I agree with Mike. CWF is total crap and in my opinion bad for wood. I know you will have to do more work than anticipated but in the long run your customer will appreciate it. Strip it!!!

I absolutely HATE CWF removal. What a pain in the ***. I agree with the above GET RID OF IT WHILE YOU CAN. What doesn't come off with the stripper usually can be sanded out, but it's time consuming and another pain in the ***. Would rather see someone use TWP and then have to get that off than get off CWF. The company that makes CWF says that it's tough to get off even with their stripper.
