Has anyone heard of a deck sealer called Sikkens (sickens)? I have had two customers ask me about this and that it will last for 5 to 10 years. WHere can it be bought and how would you remove the old sealer?

That's the $64,000 question. It's very hard to remove. I would not recommend using it. If you retain these people as customers, you will be sorry you did.

It has to be applied in several steps, and if not done correctly, will fail. When it finally does fail on its own, like I said above, it is difficult to remove with normal means........

I believe their website is www.sikkens.com You should be able to locate a dealer through their site. Oh yea, by the way, I think it costs around $50 per gallon!

Why the hell would someone want sikkens on their deck anyway? If they really want it,put it on.But it wont last 5 or 10 years. It could be a good way to get business for a long run.Just think ,not many would try or could take it off after you put it on,so costumer would pretty much have to call you back.
Its hard to reomove with wrong strippers and easy with the right ones ,but it would cost costumer a lots more than regular stripping

People want it because they dont know any better. They hear it recommended to them from someone else, like the deck builder, who also doesnt know any better.......

Sikkens sucks for the most part. My experience with it has been bad. I hear good things about it from retailers, and people who don't know about deck products. Listen to these guys they know what they are talking about on this site. I almost alway use penofin. Penofin is by far the best product I've used. It doesn't build up on decks and it's easy to work with. One draw back is that is smells awful. As you should know always wear a ventaltator when sealing, as it will save your life. I have awoken in the middle of the night with my heart racing to where I thought it was going to fail me, from not wearing a mask. Do yourself a favor and be safe.

Have not used Sikkens stains or sealers.
But they do make an excellent-excellent automotive finish.
Very expensive but worth it. Top of the line.

As for decks...don't know...

Sikkens Opinion

I have been to Sikkens School, very comprehensive instructions on application of their products and how to problem solve , and potential pitfalls.

The bottom line;
Sikkens is a good product, the Cetol sytem looks awesome, I dont think their SRD product is a good value, kinda pricy for a 1 year product.
If you use any Sikkens product, follow their directions to the letter. Sikkens always reccommends coating all sides of the deck boards... do it with their product and you will have a good , maintainable finish, break the rule and you will have a failed fiinish in a short time. Recoat the Cetol system as directed, every year on sunny decks, 18 months to 2 years on shady decks.

As far as the 8 years without maintainence... I've never seen this. I have seen Sikkens fail in 2 years with no maintainence, and I have a regular customer with 10 year old Sikkens finish that looks like new (I clean and recoat the deck every 12 to 18 months)

Good Luck

I just deleted a three page message knocking sikkens.I have had alot of experience applying and removing this product and as far as I'm concerned I wouldn't take stain from that company if they gave it to me. STAY CLEAR!!!!!!

A business associate of mine, who later became a friend, probably still has that crap peeling from his beautiful 5000 sq ft $700,000 Home.

And hey if any sikkens reps read this feel free to e-mail me I'd love to discuss it with you.The fact is ,unless they've(sikkens)
changed, when you have a problem with their product(and make no mistake you will). They'll stand behind it... so far you won't even be albe to see them in the picture.I can't believe they are even still making wood care products I bet it's hard to find on Long Island,NY

I tried to not let anger slip into this statement, but I had to comment

As far as sikkens cetol goes,if memory serves, that was their answer to their oil product, when new VOC laws made it non-compliant and that's where the promblems began.ARRGG I still have nightmares

Hey guys keep in mind when commenting on products certain products differ from state due to laws governing what goes into a product particularly with paints and sealers.

NO problem johny

As long as you don't charge him extra for traveling to NY and working in the freezing temperatures LOL!:p

Truth is he picked the stain, decided for himself to deal with the reprecussions and has been maintaining it on his own.The Sikkens rep never responded to us,despite the fact they had called on me previously to bail them out of a jam.

Like I stated before Sikkens reps gimme a call I'd Love to chat with ya!

BTW he went with sikkens to avoid the strip reseal strip reseal strip reseal thing in the first place POOR GUY !

Now I have to vent a little:

When sikkens asked a local distributor who they would recommend to to help them out with a problem they gave my Co. name.

and the problem Sikkens was :

Their gray stain was used on a cedar shake home and the home turned a bright green.Of course sikkens had some reason this happened(probably blamed it on the contractor).Well guess what the house was stained again to their specifications and SUPRISE!!!! Bright green again. I was their to give a price to strip and apply Cabots as to limit Sikkens liability(my assumption). I gave a fair price(stupid me) I should have added 300% to my estimate to atleast make Sikkens pay for 2 more of the customers they shafted.I'm kidding ofcourse(we always give a fair estimate). If this post makes it 1% harder for Sikkens sales reps I've done my part.Like I said they stood behind their product........ waaaaaaaayyyyyy behind.

I can go on and on,the chemical coatings expert on the phone, told me they probably wouldn't be making the gray stain available in my area anymore. Hey Sikkens I live in Florida so if you want to test out any products, that cost double what your competitors have, and are superior ya know except for the color thing etc etc..........Gimme a call I have a few words for ya!!!!!!

Sorry it's so long guys I have some issues LOL :D

Sikkens - absolutely the best there is.

I bought a log home in the mountains of GA that had a Sikkens finish on the logs and the deck. The deck had been neglected so I sanded it and used an oil based poly stain. What a mistake. Now I am sanding off the four coats of poly stain and using Sikkens DEK which will last forever with a little care. Sikkens also make a clear oil topcoat which waterproofs and refreshes your wood. It is $62/gallon but I can do my entire house with 2 gallons.

Sickkens is a far superior product to any other clear wood stain on the market. Anyone that knocks the product has never used it or does not know how.

You do NOT want to apply Sikkens DEK to your logs. If you think you will have little care forever, YOU are not familiar with stains or log care.

DEK is for DECKS only

I did not advocate applying DEK to logs. It's called DEK because it is for DECKS. The product you buy for upkeep is called Sikkens Maintenance. Use it on logs or your deck to keep the wood oiled and waterproofed and to protect against UV damage. Prior to the new Maintenance product, you would use Cetol 23 but it might add some color so the new product is totally clear. 99% of the log homes here in the GA mountains are finished with Sikkens. It is the best product on the market. If someone applied it to a silver or aged finish then the contractor was incompetent.
