i have an alkota 5305 that i bought new in 4-02. i have put 4 solenoids on it already. the repair shop bypassed the ignition switch last time thinking that might be it. other than that, the unit runs flawlessly. thanks duane

Apparently the Ford solenoid is extremely durable and inexpensive, especially compared to the OEM part. If the unit uses a push button starter there is a possibility that it is sticking and keeping the solenoid energized causing it to function even when the engine is running.

Therefore if there is a push button starter please ensure that it does not stay energized but the spring returns it to the neutral position.

Hope this helps? Cheers.

BTW, a similar thing happened to us and we were able to correct it with minimal problems.

What engine are you running? I have a Tuff unit with a Vanguard 18HP engine...I'm on my 3rd solenoid in about 200 hours of engine time. I will take the advice here if it goes again and replace it with a Ford unit...They're a bit larger, and I'll have to modify the connectors a bit, but hopefully it will save me the $18.95/unit for the OEM.

Mike I seen your tuff in the photo,I had one like it with a cat pump on it.I called it by bady, thats one heck of a working horse,it was always dependable, with a few miners like the above.

Fast starting, even on cold morning, the only time it would stop is if it ran out gas, good rigs.

To save on tranformers, keep your battery on a auto charger when not in use.Always go out with a hot battery when useing a 12v system, make it a hadit.

You can use an automotive (ford) style solenoid, or better yet a continuos duty solenoid like this one, I have never had one go out yet!

i have a 16 hp. vanguard. go with mark. that's the one i have. now i'm having burner problems. last fall i started to over heat so i took it to the shop. they called me to come see the insides of the burner melted into a little pile inside the coil. this was covered under warranty but i had no hot water for two weeks, and cost me $250 labor. it worked great the next time i used it, but the next time it wouldn't fire up. that was in dec. took it back to shop 2 days ago. they said the bearings in the fan went and went through the squirrel cage. i'm hoping that too is covered. i'm waiting to hear now. duane

Yep, I'm more than happy with the machine...It fires up every time no problem...the ONLY time I had a problem with it starting was this past month after it had set up for about 6 weeks without being charged...the battery was a tad too low and almost didn't get it cranked over. Other than that one time, it fires up no problem. I often don't need to choke it at all, and even when I do, it is only to get it running..I have to ease off the choke within a second or so or it starts to stall. Great running engine, no problem with the pump (once I worked out all the air leaks in my supply plumbing!).

If the solenoid goes out again, I have a spare to get me by temporarily, and will call you to order the continuous duty unit. I'm assuming I just need to cap off the middle connectors since my unit only has two contact wires?
