Staining a house with chinking

Hi everybody!

What is the best way to stain a house with chinking and not get stain on it?This is a small home but i dont think masking would be an option.
Iwas suggested chink paint. However homeowner said he wanted it same color as it is now.
Could i spray the whole home with airless, get stain all over chink and then paint chinking hopefully the same color,if thats possible. That would be a lot faster then masking. How would this paint adhere on oil base stain.
Thanks Johny

Johny,

Permachink's Knoxville # is: 800-548-3554. I checked their catalog, and it does not address the 'oil' issue. I am assuming it is not a problem, since it did not specify. A product like Readyseal might cause a problem because of its 'non-drying' properties. The coverage of the chink paint is 300' per gallon on 4" wide lines. Comes in the same colors as the Permachink chinking does.

I've heard some say that you can cover the chinking with vasoline, but i cannot imagine how long it would take to do that.

I hate to say it but....

You would probably be better off doing the staining by hand over using chink paint. If you have to go over the entire house with chink paint spraying isn't going to save you much time. Some jobs just require the ol' brush and bucket :)

Beeing a small home i was going to brush it,but logs are very rough ,so it would take quite an agressive brushing there.

Problem #2 .some places chinking is flush with the logs, most they overlap about half to 3/4 inch.I hope you can imagine what i am saying. It wouldnt be possible to cover underside of the overlap log without the stain running on chinking.
Why is it so hard to paint chinking?

Thanks guys Johny

I am thinking the same thing you are Johny---the stain would definitely run onto the chink, causing smears. I don't think it would take that long to paint the chink lines, especially since I am sure the home you are speaking of has square timbers and 4" lines. Now, if this were a chinked handcrafted home, yeah, it would take forever to paint all of those chink lines.

Sorry... I was thinking conventional construction :) 12" rounds or similar.

Square timbers would be easier but I think it would still be more cost effective to brush out the home than to paint the chinking. I guess I would base my decision on how nice the chinking looks currently. If it looks like hell... why not. Although chink paint isn't all to cheap and the coverage isn't nearly that of a stain. I've always worried about how the stuff will hold up.

One solution to keep from staining the chinking might be to carry a spray bottle full of mineral spirits with you. If it runs onto the chinking you can hit it right away and wipe the area down.

Now for the roughness... all I can say is use a thick product!

Have any pics to share on this one?

Have you ever applied the chinking? If, so how hard is it to do it?

I sealed several log homes this summer and keep getting calls - I have a home owner who just built a log home - they want me to seal and chink. Do you need special tools? How would you bid?

Do search on pricing, its there. It takes practice to chink good, unless somebody shows you i wouldnt just start doing it.Special tools are chink pump, around 3k.If you have Permachink in your area,go to them ,they will show you and set you up with all you need,at least they are good for that

I use a rough stain pad on chinked construction. I've chinked small additions (it was too expensive to get the real "chinkers" for a garage) and it a real trick. Yes you need a bazooka type applicator to do it with any speed. I do quite a few log homes and prefer to spray (airless) and back brush, and when I see chinking I wence wondering how many pads I'll tear up! Good luck.

Also, if you decide to do any chinking you'll find a cake icing 2" knife and spray bottle will be your 2 main tools.
