hi mike,

as i've said before, i have yet to find anything stripexL can't handle. Have you heard of the GYPSEY product?? i seal a lot of aggregate driveways here with an acrylic seal, which if i'm not mistaken is probably pretty similar to Extreme. i had some 1/4 inch thick puddles of it (driveway seal) in the back of my truck that always bug me, and i put some GYPSEY on the puddles and it ate through the stuff in about two minutes. that stuff doesnt play around, might be something you have to resort to. What about Wolmans Deckstrip??? surely their own stripper would work...........tell that to CWF!!! good luck mike

take care,

Wolman's Strip A & L

Mike:

Wolmans came out with a new stripper this year called Strip A & L that is suppose to take the Extreme off. It is a pretty pricy product however. Extreme has been taken off the market in the northern tear of states due to lack of performance.

Mike,

I'd try the HD-80!

I've used it several times now, and just last week used it on some solid color deck stain and it took better than 95% off the first time, and this solid color stain was just applied about 15 months ago. I mixed it a little stronger than the package said and sprayed it on let it set for 30 minutes or so and hit it and off it came. Its much more economical then the other stuff also!
Give it a try. I've been very pleased since I started using it. I've almost completely gotten away from the the Cuprinol stain/sealer remover since I started with the HD-80. It also seems to be a little safer to use. I mixed some up and put it on some plants at the house and it didn't black spot them like the cuprinol or wolmans.

Just my thoughts!

OK guys.......the pressure is really on me to do a good job on this one now...........I just sold this job for almost double the price of what others have charged this guys neighbors. Expectations are running pretty high here........and the deck is cedar. I expect to start on it this week.......I'll let you know how it works out.

The HD-80 did nothing for it. Wolman's Extreme is just that........extreme.

I just found something that works though.........did a test patch today in an obscure, unweathered spot. Here's a pic:

The product is called Bix Spray on Stripper. If anyone has used this product, do you have any advice? I will be doing the whole deck next week..........its a 1500 square foot cedar deck..........I hope the rest of it goes as easy as this test patch did. I only let the test patch dwell for 20 mins. I will let the deck wait longer just to be sure.

I just received a packet full-o-stuff from Wolman, their Contractors binder. They do in fact, advertise their new DeckStrip A&L as being the correct product to remove the Extreme.

Hey Mike,

I use Bix Tough Job... same product , different consistancy, on exterior garage and entry doors (varathane, urathanes, etc...)and to strip oddball finishes. We apply it with an airless and cover with plastic. The Tough Job dries out a little quicker than what they imply. It is based with methylene chloride which has been outlawed in many states...nasty stuff... carcinogenic.... but some mistakes (extreme) just require these measures to remedy. I have never actually tried it on Extreme but it's good to know you have had initial success.

hi mike,

i've tried the bix when getting up some tough paint spots. My advice would be to look for something else. If you do use it, where respirator and protective clothing. the way i understand it, methyl chloride is one of those nasty chemicals that you realize has hurt you later on in life. In past posts, you have stated that you did not want to use an expensive stripping product, but if i'm not mistaken this stuff costs about $10 per qt. I guess it would be cheaper in larger volumes, but it will still be high. If you can order some of that wolmans a and L, i think you would be better off healthwise and in the pocket. good luck,

I have heard from several people that A & L does not work for Extreme. Wolman themselves told me to "cover the deck in plastic for an hour and a half after I spray it on" and it might work..............YEA RIGHT! I'm gonna cover a 1500 sq ft deck in plastic...........sure.

Jon, Yes, I don't want to use expensive strippers.........but sometimes you have to. I know that if I do a good job for this guy, I will be at his house for years to come. Also, his house is in one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in our area..........gated community. When you get a job in there, you do your best and usually pick up more work.......

Thanks to all for your responses...........I'll let u know how it works out.

Mike,

Please do keep us posted on how it all works out for you. Since most of us here pretty much know that Extreme is a lousy product...other customers will eventually be calling us to remove it off their decks and knowing if it works for you will help out tremedously. Good luck with it!

Once I rid this deck of this god-awful sealer, I intend on sealing with Ready Seal, and maintaining this deck for years to come.
