My dearest pressure washer friends ... I'm looking for testimonies about being in the phone book.

I'm considering getting in both of our phone books here in Baton Rouge, but I don't want to sign the contract untill I know it's worth it ...

Please, throw a bone to a newbie.. I just want the phone to ring ........

Positively worth it. Keep in mind that listing your business and your services with a phone number makes you just another ad. An eye catching headline will work much better. Lets say I am a potential customer and I am thinking about getting a housewash.

Spend the extra $$$ to make your ad stand out among the competition. When you look in the yellow pages for something, do you call the first one listed or do you automatically find the biggest and most colorful ad?
There are so many "AAA" this and that companies just to be listed first, they don't stand out anymore. My .02 cents.

excellent .. ! The more popular book doesn't come out again untill September, but our New Orleans book comes out in Febuary, I'm thinking about getting an Add in that one and possibly another rig and have someone work that area.. I just don't feel like waiting untill September .. you know .. what do you guys think ?

Been there-done that with the biggest best looking ad. Cost me $1000/month for ads that didn't even come close to paying for themselves. (Even if I had a 100% close rate) All we will do anymore is a simple listing with the basic info. BBB Member, web address(this is where you put all your pretty pics) phone #.

My experience with yellowpages is that you get price shoppers or impulse "Wonder what is cost?" lookers.

Definitely need to be in phone book (minimal listing) but save your marketing dollars for other things that work better as a whole markrting campaign.

Would it be wise to put a special on the yellow page add.

like "50% off driveway wash with house wash" or something to catch the attention ?

ps. I'm not going to go to big, but maybe like a 4 line listing .. big enough to stand out from the "one liners"

I'm gonna share what I have learned through expensive trial and error. Choose the book with
a) the smallest localocalized distribution. Here it is Verizon and the book that serves the Western end of the county. This area houses TV news personalities, Philadelphia sports stars and business owners. Its all about choosing the right demographic.
b) The book with the smallest footprint. Countless people have told me the Yellow Book is too cumbersome physically.

I also hear from many business owners that live in the more affluent areas that they like to support local companies. Marketing trick... get a local telephone number (if you don't live in the region you are advertising) and have it forwarded to your office/home/cell.

I've been around a lttle bit longer than you so I get referrals but at least 65% of my new business is generated via the phone book.

RE: Mike's point about price shoppers. Only when I decided to go with the larger distribution book that coveres both sides of my county. Poor people price shop. People with money buy value.

Every market is different! All depends on how diluted the competitive field is, and under what headings you choose. In our market, not much competitive pressure (professional anyway). Having over 15 years sales/marketing management experience, display ads DO get called first in CERTAIN headings. My belief is that a well designed display ad that "BRIEFLY" & "EFFECTIVELY" describes the differentiation in your business vs. the competitor can be quite effective. If you're under the Pressure Washers heading, they already know that's what you do. Describe something different you offer.

Ken, gonna' disagree with you here! Might be true in your market, but in ours, which is PREDOMINANTLY old German & Polish conservative, it's the other way around. The blue collar (ethnic) family that grew up earning a living in the factory to buy a piece of the "American Dream" are our absolute BEST customers, which in turn are normally our highest profit jobs. The affluent are the toughest sell for the type of money we charge for our work. Almost 90% of the time we lose out on these prospects to a lowballer who will not even come close to our quality. OH WELL we always say!! Just my $.02 on that issue.

Yellow Book advertising.........has given us an R.O.I. of $7 - $1 in terms of actual sales vs. expense. We always have to tweek each season, and watch what our competitors do so we can respond effectively. Bottom line is....ALL advertising works!!!!! Just not for every business, all the time.

Most of us expect to get fast results when we spend money on advertising. The only guarantee is your going to spend money!!

You need to be in the Yellow Pages but you must also use other forms of advertising to tell the World that you are there!

Click on the link to see a copy of an ad that we have run for several years. It does increase the number of calls but we also get more tire kickers.

wow .. you guys do a good bit of stuff .. You have a unit that pushes 10,000 PSI at 10 GPM .. wow ! I'd wear steel toe shoes for that one ... A very nice add, my budget will allow me to spend around 200.00/month on the add, so I want to get the most I can from it .. So glad I've had so many replies.. it really helps get things into perspective ..

The waterblaster is just another tool. Just like a mechanics toolbox. Many tools are not used very much but when you need it, it is there.
