to direct drive or not to direct drive

That is the question!!

Still searching the earth for parts for my first ever own build diesel unit. Had my heart on direct drive with a 32Hp engine, using a 'spider' coupling, until someone asked why I wasn't using a gear box?
They then informed me that a gearbox would allow me to use a smaller engine, thus saving on room in my trailer and $$$'s in my pocket. I have always used reduction gearboxes on my Honda units, but thought doing direct drive would be more efficient fuel wise (as the engine isn't working as hard).
Any thoughts??

Made My Own Direct Drive Diesel Unit Last Fall. Took A Long Time To Match The Unit Up To The Pump Within The Tolerances For Truble Free Maintenance. Used A Love Joint To Marry The Units Together.

As For Simplicity The Next Time I Might Use Belts With An Ideler Pully For Tention (no Loose Belts)

As For Fuel Costs: One Day Gas= One Week Diesel. 8hr Days

Remeber After Building The Diesel Unit Bring A Back Up. You Will Have Breakdowns With Little Notice For The First Few Weeks.

Direct Drive Vs Belts
Both Have Pros And Cons, It All Depends On Your Mechanicial Ability And Patients.

We have always used belted pumps.

Currently we are using General TSF2221's. Our primary unit has a genset to make power and we have a 20 hp 220 3-phase motor running the General pump. Earlier this year we installed a Kubota 48 hp liquid diesel engine in our other truck. The Kubota engine is also running an 8000-watt generator besides the General.

I will try to attach some pictures.

Both do good jobs. We like the electric better because we are using Lp (much cleaner) and the genset does not make near as much noise as the Kubota.

DAVE,
THOSE ARE SOME PRETTY SERIOUS SET-UPS. I CAN APPRECIATE SOMEONE WHO IS SERIOUS ABOUT WHAT THEY DO, AND BUILDING THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT TO DO IT WITH. I JUST BUILT A TSF2021 SET-UP, AND NOW I'M HOOKED ON THE HIGHER FLOWING PUMPS. HOW ARE THOSE 2221'S WORKING OUT?

Hello Tim,

The 2221’s are doing fine. We are running them at 1750 rpm to get 10 gpm at 3000 psi. They make quite a bit of noise compared to what we have run in the past.

We must have high flow equipment to do what we do. I'm very satisfied with their performance.
