Weed Trimmer problem

Anyone here good with weed trimmers / 2 cycle engines.

I have a Ryobi 31cc 2-cycle 725r gas trimmer. It will only run under Half-Choke. If I open the choke competely it shuts right off.

It has a clean filter & fresh Fuel. It has had bad fuel in it in the past I suppose there could be something of that in there somewhere but the bad fuel was just some water in the fuel, no grime.

I'd guess it's something simple but..... it's beyond my limited mechanical knowledge.

Thanks

I don't know if this helps, but I have a simular problem with mine. It hates to run while cold. Once I get it going, I have to keep it going full throttle for a couple minutes while playing with the choke. After it warms up, it runs fine.

If it's not a case of just being cold... the thought I have that may be the problems is that you may have some gum build up. If you gas flow is limited, your motor will die if it gets too much air in the air/fuel ratio. This would explain why it would run at half choke. You might want to get some cleaner/gum remover and really clean the fuel passage ways.

Someone else may be able to help more...

I had this problem also. Mine had a screen on the exhaust and it was clogged up with carbon. I took the screen off and threw it away it has been running fine since

try a slightly hotter spark plug or at least a new one.
too much air/ fuel and not enuff burn is the problem.

I had the same problem with a blower that had sat with gas in it for about two months. It wouldn't start at all at first. I took the carb apart and cleaned everything with carb cleaner. The needle valve was stuck, and this helped. However, it would only run if I kept working the choke back and forth. Talked to a mechanic and found that often when they sit with gas in them like that the fuel metering diaphragm in the carb gets stuck open, closed, or half way inbetween. Took it in and had that replaced and it runs fine.

Not sure if this is your problem, but maybe this will help.

I have been told that you should put gas stabilizer in your fuel if you aren't using it every day. That will help with bad gas and problems like mine.
