Yesterday's Weirdest Estimate

Did an estimate yesterday morning…

Just looking at this place, I knew I didn’t want the job, but since I was already there I decided to go in and talk shop.

I got to talking to the bar tender (who was the person that had called me), when I notice this guy 3 stools down who was just too interested in my rig and what we we’re talking about. To make a long story short, I go outside and measure the job.

Deck & Lot at a local VFW.

Deck: Clean & Brighten only, all 2x6 PT const, Floor 1006 sq ft, 8 3x5 and 1 3x7 picnic tables, and 37x1.5 ft of perimeter seating. Didn’t include the privacy fence (attached to the deck), steps, verticals, rails, table seating, or 4 round tables (they looked like those cable reels that we used to use for furniture in college) on my estimate.

Parking Lot: Rinse only, Asphalt, 8,465 sq ft.

Then, I went back inside with my scribed notes and started writing the estimate. The ole boy, sipping his beer, 3 stools down couldn’t wait to hear what my price was, and he wasn't shy about letting me know it! So, I decided to make my estimate simple. I wrote it up at 1006 sq ft for the floor, 99 sq ft for the table tops, and 56 sq ft for the seats @ 1.00 per sq ft and for the lot, 8,465 sq ft @ .04 sq ft, for a total of $1,499.60. Then I discounted it by 10% LOL! I handed the bar keep my estimate and she announced the bid at $1349.64. The guy 3 stools down jumped up and said: “You owe me a beer. I told you he’d be higher than my priceâ€.

Instead of getting pissed off and walking out, I ordered a soda (it was 11 AM by now) and talked to this ole boy for a few minutes. It turns out that the has a 10gpm @ 10000psi wash rig, 5 million in liability insurance, does 99% of his work in Dallas, and all he does is collect the money these days, because he doesn’t work the rig anymore as he prefers to pay somebody to do that. As I finished my pop and got up to leave, I asked him how much he bid on this job?

He replied: $350.00 for the entire job and 2 hours labor!

Oh yea, I left a few business cards and some door hangers on the bar.

I laughed all the way home wondering how many dart games could be played on those door hangers!

I bet he wasn't lying like a dog Mel,how much ya want bet huh, hawhaw.

The way I see it is she is the @ss,If I was you I'd call her back and say hey I made a mistake it is 299.99,I misfugured it.

This is the way I see it:

Man setting on bar stool could have been collecting his bill and she was telling him he was to high which he bet her a beer she couldn't get it done cheaper which she bet him a beer she could.

Most bars like that doesn't really care how clean it is as long as its washed off b/c most drunks don't really care what they set in or step in.

I've sold to alot of bars and also set on dat stool sipping a beer while another saleman tried to get my business from the bar tender but no betting was done.

They are alot of beting in a bar,its I bet you this I bet you that but usually it just for fun.I think she took the bet to far,I think she'd be a @sso smart mouth tight wad bar tender as to be to cheap to buy the guy a beer.

I'd call her and place a order for a club(make a name up),tell her you'll be there in two hours to pickup the order, only not to showup, don't forget to ask for a discount.I'd waste some of her time, make her work for nothing too as you did.You went out of your way to help her, even to the point giving a discount. As you see I learnd alot of tricks while saleing as in you scatch my back I'll scatch yours or you screw me I'll screw you back.I never did get to screw everymany people tho, most are up and up when calling looking for a salesman, like I said I think she took the beer bet to far.......anyway dat the way I see it.

Wow! I really didn’t think anybody would respond to this post, but I’m glad ya’ll did.

I think BigBoy was right on the money with his response and Mel was saying pretty much the same thing, just in fewer words.

If anybody wants this one or knows anybody who does, (it's located in the heart of OKC), give me a call. I’ll give ya the details. Bring chemicals, because you'll be dealing with rubber skid marks from motorcycles and God knows what, when you clean this deck.

Hey, the next guy that called me (on Saturday) was upset because I wanted .08 sq ft to clean his 8x20 driveway. He never even let me get to the part where I tell him that the rig doesn't go on the road for less than $60.00.
