Have a customer requesting Cabot Sealer.
Have heard of it but have never used it.
Any tricks or suggestions for using it?
Or does it behave about the same as anything else out there when applying it?

Thanks!

Oil based= pump up sprayer
water based= airless sprayer

DOWNSIDE= grays too fast, cost too much, leaves dirty water marks down the sides.

I have only used it once, because a customer a few years ago bought it and could not return it.

90% of the reason why people want to use it is because it was rated high by consumer reports. What I do is sell them on what I use, Ready Seal, and tell them that it is not rated by consumer reports because it is basically only offered to those in this industry..........I explain its advantages, and make them feel like its better, which it is.

The other thing about Cabots is the way it looks when it is done........looks almost like a solid stain.........looks like you used watered down paint..........not semi transparent. I have heard it holds up really well............but lots of people do not like the way it looks..........hides the grain of the wood, etc.

Thanks...I'll pass this along to the customer and hopefully they will be happy with something I am more familiar with.
Or more something that I know will last and will look good.

Mike is right about the consumer reports,Cabot actually sends a laminated copy to the paint stores to show to customers, what they don't tell you is the product they tested is what Mike is talking about, the semi trans stain, but they lead them to believe that the clear solution sealer is the product. The stuff is garbage,I try to explain the difference but it usually doesn't work.Mike is also right about the way the stain looks it basically watered down paint, everytime I am asked to use it I end up putting a second coat on which defeats the purpose of a semi-trans stain.

I guess I would have to third the opinion for the most part. I think it is a pretty decent product (2 years) but you have to be desiring a certain look to use it. We use the oil base only and apply it via airless with ease. The semi trans is 75% solid in appearance hiding much of the grain. A second coat pretty much gives you a 95% opaque finish. We use it but only on certain projects. We started getting into more of the "decorative" aspects of wood care (two tones, coordinating finishes, etc...) so weve used it more this year than ever.

like the solid, don' t like the clear. I did 10 Townhomes with it earlier this summer. It was in there association contract. I normally use Olympic CWP for any clear jobs.
