If there is no stain, you can simply use a wood cleaner. If you use just water, you can really damage the wood with high pressure. The cleaner loosens the dirt so you can use minimal pressure.

If its cedar you can use 12% 1 gallon 12% and 4 gallon of water with a little cascade soap .let dwell 10 15 minutes and rinse .rinse really good .your gonna have suds .so RINSE RINSE dont let it dry on the cedar ,then neutralize with citralic brightner.let dry to 7% moisture or less to stain. If you want call me im in buford ga if your not to far i can assist you

Wow, you can get 7% moisture content on wood down there? I thought you had to live in a desert to have that low of humidity. The best I get up in Philly region is usually 15%. Most sealers can be applied at 15%. Higher parafinics usually should be applied around the 12% mark. On untreated wood I do not advocate using that high of a percentage of sodium hypochlorite (bleach). That's just a personal opinion, it doesn't mean Steve doesn't get satisfactory results with it. I prefer to use a sodium percarbonate product. Your best bet would be to get EFC-38 from Sunbrite.

It's a technique that takes a little time to learn but, basically it involves touching the tip of your tongue to the wood to see if you can taste the sugars still seeping out....................................naw I'm just kidding.

You would need a moisture meter.
