Starting up a business - Questions

I’ve been thinking of starting up a pressure washing business and have been researching the matter for quite some time. I was wondering as to how a person would go about being insured & bonded and exactly what that entails. I will start small with a portable pressure washer (2500-3000 psi) for decks and siding, but have seen ads for trailer units.

I have read through the discussions from members of this site and which have been a great help. For that thank you.

Any advise or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

I myself am not entirely sure what it means to be bonded. I think it has somehting to do with if you're ever sued, being bonded will protect you from losing your business.
Insurance? If you're going to be doing any commercial work, most businesses (esp. large corporations) will REQUIRE you to have a minimum $1 million general liability policy, and they will want proof of that before even considering you.
Accidents on the road should be covered by your vehicle's policy. Mishaps at your home should be covered by your homeowner's/renter's policy.
The only other thing I can think of to be insured against is theft. Use your own judgement.
Hope that didn't waste your time. Good luck!

Bonding, as it was explained to me, really has nothing to do with what we do because we're "outside". It's used more by folks that have to enter someone's home, ie, window cleaners or janitorial services. It's kind of like a theft protection.....EX. Suzie Q goes to clean Mrs. Smith's windows and Mrs. Smith's diamond broach disappears. If you're bonded and Suzie Q is convicted of the crime, they pay the restitution, not you as the employer.

Insurance is not an option. Anyone who gets into this business without it is foolish. So many things can go wrong, even to good people. EX. You're washing Mrs. Smith's house, wind blows your chemical over onto Mr. Jones' car and eats his paint off. Can you go out of pocked to repair/repaint his car? Or, your tip flies through a window and you shoot 50 gallons of water into the living room....

Workers compensation is also something that we would not consider working without. Did you know that when you hire anyone to do work at your house, plumbing, electrical, lawn care, you are immediately the employer and you are responsible for any injury that they sustain while working on your property? Having WC is a protection that you provide to your customer, not yourself. It is a great marketing tool as well. You also may not be able to get on some construction sites without it if you're looking into doing new construction work.

When looking at a machine, you should be more concerned with the GPMs than the pressure it delivers. 4 GPMs is the minimum you want to play with. If you're using quality chemicals, you want your machine to deliver great rinsing capabilities. It will increase your productivity dramatically.

If you are going to get $1 mil insurance you might as well get $2 mil. The cost is just a little bit more per year but if you are doing any kind of commercial work it is worth it. We actully went up to $3 mil this year and it cost us less than the $2 mil and we are getting a whole lot more stuff that we couldn't do before.

Insurance

I'm new at the business and plan on getting started in April but I would like to have insurance for my busines. Ive read this thread and I see that it is important to be covered. Well I checked with the company (Nationwide) that insures my vehicle and they quoted me an astronomical price and they suggested a couple of other companies where I might be able to get a better deal. Do you guys know of a good insurer to purchase my policy? And what do you consider a good price for insurance?

Thanks

My poicy is just for general liability, 1 million coverage, and the price is (I can't remember exaclty) about $930/yr. I put $382 down, and pay $71/month for 9 months.
It's from a local agency, and I don't know if they can cover outside the state.
Can't hurt to call them, though. Maybe they can point you in the right direction.
Morrison Ins Agency, (936)598-279, or (800)256-5108. My rep. is JoLynn Fountain.
Just looked in the phone book. They are an authorized "Inependent" agent. they are national, I believe. Maybe you can find your local Independent agent.
Good luck.

Liberty Mutual is an agency that covers PWing. You might be able to find an agent that writes for them.

Depends on the state - Liberty Mutual doesn't do GL in NC for power washing, however they do carry our Workers Comp! Just FYI, State Farm in NC won't touch this industry either!

Bonding, in my state, is protection for the customer, not you or me. In case of a lawsuit, a bonding agent agrees to pay the customer, and to collect from you.

What to charge?

Hello, I'm thinking about starting a powerwashing service with a focus on Restaurant Hood Cleaning in the metro Detroit area? Are there any guidelines or process instructions for Hood Cleaing? If so where can I find them? For a place like TGIF's what is the going rate to charge? And typically what would be charged to powerwash the side of a fast food restaurant or family home? How many people in a crew? We are looking for any specifics or generic information. I found a 3800psi Powerwasher at Home Depot would that be ok for starters?

Any advise or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I don't know if you got your insurance thing straightened out, but...you might try Farm Bureau, if they are in your area. They cover pressure washers AS WELL AS start-up businesses ( a double-whammy when you look for insurance). I got a $2 mil. policy for $641 a year. Good luck!
